Summary
Some say a curse leaves a mark on the soul. That the fraction of the population who experience it are forever changed.
This is true. Those educated in the matter know that in fact, however, a curse goes even further than this. It splits the soul in two. When a curse manifests on a boy's tenth birthday, their soul is made physical in the form of a daemon: a being that takes the physical appearance of an animal. They are a companion for life.
A child's daemon can typically change between forms at will. The settling of a daemon into one permanent form marks the shift into adulthood, and is the end goal of all students of St Churnley's School for Cursed Boys - total mastery of their curse, and of the sacred bond between them and their daemon.

His father would have insisted it was because he was a child without any blood on his sword and his head in the clouds. As a teen, Robb’s regrets were more along the lines of childsplay–sparring that lasted too long, going for a ride with too few furs, drinking too much.
But now, Robb is a king.
King in the North.
And his regrets match those of a boy turned man far too suddenly. He regretted letting his father leave the North, not hugging Sansa tightly enough as she left, not teaching Arya at least the basics of how to use a sword.
The death of his father marks the beginning of a war and Robb regrets not riding Southward with them months ago. But Robb was Lord of Winterfell in Ned’s stead and now he is King of the North in his death.
