Kaz first ran when he was twelve, two years after he'd been grabbed off the street and told he was something everyone knew he was not.
He was caught and told he was a liability. That was at least more accurate than calling him a prince. Kaz told them as much.
He was locked in the highest room of the tallest tower like an idiot from a storybook.
Now, two months off from eighteen, Kaz plots from that room. There's a wedding being planned involving the royal family of the neighboring kingdom and it may ruin his chance at escape.

Kaz absorbs her frenzied words impassively, letting the rattling sounds of the bus fill the silence. Seems like he didn’t even need to go searching for Inej’s lever. She’s perfectly willing to place it right in his hand.
This…agreement would put Inej firmly in his debt, he realizes. Right where he wants her.
Inej seems to take his silence for a negative. She tries again, her eyes silently pleading. “We could help each other. Like—like partners.”
Kaz hums thoughtfully. “Partners in crime?”
“Exactly,” Inej says, her eyes lighting up. “We’ll take Professor Haskell for all he’s worth.”
The decision hardly needs to be made at all.
“Sure,” Kaz says, offhandedly, with a casual shrug for good measure. “The deal is the deal.”

His face and neck were still marred with the slightly reddish pits that the pox left behind, even months later, and he was gaunt with sickness and malnutrition, bones jutting hard and nasty. They’d have pinned him down as a weakling, before the plague. But that was before. Now, in the miserable, scraping afterwards, not only was he alive, but half the gambling halls and gangs on the Lid were desperate to have him— or so Seeger said, anyway. Haskell didn’t know why this kid wanted to be in the Dregs, when the Razorgulls were practically throwing cash at him, but he wasn’t going to count his chickens. Maybe he preferred crows to gulls.
