The wolf inside her, so strong, sinks to the floor with a tired sigh.
“Come here,” Mahiru says, and Kotoko obeys with every fiber of her being for reasons beyond herself, mind caught in a whirlpool, logic crumpled at her feet. She falls into Mahiru’s waiting, outstretched arms.

“Once again, I am not taking care of you,” Kotoko insists, her fingers continuing to comb through Mahiru’s hair in search of the wound. “I’m just making sure you don’t die.”
There it is. As soon as Kotoko trails her fingers across the golf ball sized raised bump with a barely-there touch, Mahiru yelps like a kicked puppy, recoiling away.
“Ow,” Mahiru whines, “My head hurts, Kotoko-chan.”

Mahiru stares at her, pressed lips, troubled eyes. “Kotoko shouldn't worry so much,” she tells her. “Just as there are cruel people in the world, so are there kind. To doubt that… I think that sounds lonely.”
Kotoko's lips warbled, ever so slightly. “Lonely?”
“Isn't Kotoko lonely?” Mahiru asks her. “Otherwise, why would she be seeing me?”
Kotoko considers this. “Maybe it's guilt,” she laughs, breathy and shaking faintly, “I don't really feel regret, but guilt and remorse are different things, aren't they?”
Mahiru hums, smiling softly. “Maybe,” she agrees, “Or maybe Kotoko misses me.”
