Shinonome Ena could not return to the life she lived ten years ago.
But that was okay, right? The life she lived now would not shame her for the horns on her head, would not disregard her passions, would keep her warm no matter what the world threw her way. She had friends: a musically gifted witch who wished to cure her father's illness, a deadpan but caring archer who fled the life her mother pushed on her and the carefree knight who would sneak away from the palace to visit them late at night. Yet, it seemed that gaping hole in her chest would never be filled. Something was always missing.
Shinonome Akito lost his sister ten years ago.
His parents had searched and mourned when they inevitably could not find her, believing her life to have been taken during the midst of the war. Unlike everyone else, it seemed as if he could never move on, believing in the depths of his soul that maybe she was still out there. After officially becoming a knight, the resources to track her down were finally at his fingertips. But a rebellion was forming under the surface of his home and the carefree knight he'd been paired with to guard the detective investigating it seemed to know more than they were letting on.

It wasn’t someone Akito recognised. And Akito knew pretty much everyone in Vivid Street’s face, even if it wasn’t accompanied by a name or any actual details. His face looked cold, either due to the somewhat frigid Winter weather or the fact that he didn’t seem to show any real emotion - the boy simply stared at the wall in front of him, Akito’s tag sitting on that wall, brighter than any other.
Moody lighting not being able to mask the most notable detail of the boy’s presence, hair, which Akito could only assume was split dyed, the way one side was darker than the other. It was kinda cool, probably considered cooler than Akito’s hair. His sister always told him orange was a bad colour for him; it made the darker roots stand out at the top of his head, and the blonde streak didn’t help with the unintentional choppy gradient effect.
Who even was this guy, sitting in his alley, sitting on the ground? Akito usually sat alone. This boy had his long legs brought to his chin, unmoving as he sat, seemingly lost in thought. Akito realised he was probably staring. How long had he been standing here? What does he even do here? Nobody was ever in his area, now a random guy sat right where he didn’t seem to belong.

Here were the facts: Sometime in adolescence, a person developed a series of markings on their body. They tended to be raised patches of skin, sometimes slightly red or brown, and tough like scar tissue. A person’s mark was as unique as a fingerprint. When the marks of both were placed atop one another, they’d form a solid, black circle, the lines of one filling in the gaps of the other.
Akito gave up on soulmates a long time ago. The religious zealots could scream all they wanted, but some stupid birthmark wasn't going to tell him what to do. Plus, he'd seen the fallout, seen matches go wrong and right and the unpredictability was not something he found appealing.
Until he found himself falling for his best friend. Then the whole idea seemed a little less stupid.
