It still feels a bit like an open wound inside her, skin rubbed all red and raw, the push of a seatbelt too high up on her collarbone as it ripped into her flesh. Her old woman doesn’t know how to stay in one place for long, always shakes Susie awake one morning and ushers her out of the building and into the car. Eventually, Susie learns to stop unpacking all together. It’s not like she’s ever around long enough.
They sleep in the car and in motels when they’re only staying for a few weeks and apartments when it edges up closer to a year. With every new place, Susie snarls just a little bit quicker, has to clean bloodstains just a little bit sooner. She gets meaner. She tries to revel in it.

Susie was tired. She was tired of always being tired. Ever since her mom died and she got put into the foster system, she's basically been on survival mode all the damn time. She can barely ever scrounge up a meal a day, let alone three. She couldn't remember the last time she had a full night of sleep. She was tired.
She was eight when it happened. They were driving home from Susie's dentist appointment. She was never very good at brushing her teeth; still wasn't. The guy in the other car was drunk off his ass. The cops said his blood alcohol percentage was so high he shouldn't have even been alive.
But he was, and now her mom isn't.

“I was actually wondering if I could stay the night here, if that’s alright.” Susie turned back around to face Noelle, not quite brave enough to meet her gaze. “My uh, my Mom kicked me out, so I don’t… really…”
Finally raising her eyes from the ground, Susie trailed off as she realized that Noelle’s face had gone white, her ears flattened back against her head.
The girl was frozen, hands still over her mouth from where she’d been mid-laughter just seconds ago, eyes impossibly wide and pupils a vivid red. She looked… terrified, holy shit. Was it something she’d said?
“Woah, Noelle, are you okay?” Susie lifted an arm towards her with obvious concern, and Noelle instantly stumbled back, shaking her head rapidly with her hands still clapped over her mouth. Her nostrils were flaring, and cold wind was still blowing through the open door, carrying Susie’s scent straight to her.
Her voice was trembling.
"You need to leave. Now."
