When Zuko was born, he was sick. He wasn't supposed to live. Everyone said it was Zuko's fate to die. Agni disagreed. Zuko was blessed with life. He lived, much to Ozai's dismay. When Zuko is banished, he does not look for The Avatar. He doesn't believe The Avatar is still out there. Then, while Zuko and Iroh are sailing around the South Pole, they see that brilliant light in the sky. Zuko knows, this is where his life changes.
Or: Zuko, blessed by the Sun Spirit, joins the Gaang early as they're being hunted by Azula.

A ship. As if one could simply sail to the Boiling Rock. One of the people walking between Zuko and Akira rushed ahead with the command. Zuko had to give it to them, the acting was impressive. Father had even gone so far and supplied them with palace guard robes. But they were truly going somewhere. Had Ozai forgotten he had promised that Zuko would never see a flame, and he could forget about the sun?

Summary
Zuko never wanted Izumi to feel pressured to be a perfect firebender like he was by Ozai, but he had hoped to foster a love for firebending that came from the lessons he'd once learned from Ran and Shaw. With Izumi showing an intense dislike for firebending, he feels like he's failed at that goal.
When he receives a message from the Sun Warriors asking for assistance, Zuko decides to bring Izumi along, hoping that it will give her a new perspective.

Uncle Iroh- for some reason Zuko yet again failed to understand -refused to shoot lightning at his nephew. When further asked about it, he'd said something about it being for safety and health reasons (although it was still a bit unclear whose health he was referring to).
Zuko had never been able to count on luck though. If he wanted to ensure he could get an upper hand against his family, he would have to go and look for one himself, like with pretty much everything else in his life.
But perhaps people should really be careful of what they wish for. It might become true in the least expected ways.

With Avatar Aangs death the new Avatar, a water bender named Katara, must now try to reinstall the peace and security Aang had tried so hard to achieve. But when a new face appears in her life, she isn't sure she can handle the destiny thrown at her.
With the spiritual, political, and social landscapes headed for turmoil, we follow Katara and her friend Toph and her more than friend Jetsan as they begin the journey that is the avatar and her companions. Together they will make new friends and new enemies in the form of firebenders and more. Perhaps even a different bond with an ornery prince who they just can't seem to get off of their trail.

Zuko knew that joining the Avatar and his group would be hard. After all, he'd chased them around the world, found them in Ba Sing Se (on accident really), and ended up helping his sister almost end the existence of the Avatar itself. So...his chances really hadn't been that great in the first place. Honestly, why he'd thought it'd be easy, he really wasn't sure. Another bad idea to throw on the pile of Zuko's past. But hey, it wasn't all bad. He's...different now, at the very least. Now he just has to hope that means he's better too.
