The Lodge is home to a group of elite hunters of all things supernatural. For McCullum, it's his only refuge from a storm that's left him broken. All that matters to him is Reid gets the care he needs, even if he is distrustful of the Lodges motives.

On the ground below him lay a Skal, a nasty looking creature with the skin peeled viciously away from it's neck. At least it wasn't a person, the back of his mind said, as he rebelled against what had just happened. No...this couldn't be happening. The leader of the Guard of Priwen...a leech. For most of the fight he had pulled his punches and by the time he’d realized he couldn’t afford to, it had been too late.

Geoffrey drinks the blood of King Arthur to aid him in his fight against Jonathan Reid and he still looses, worse there was something about that 'elixir' that no one in Priwen knew. At least not until it was too late.
Geoffrey tells himself that he was going to hide what happened to him from his men but the truth always comes out eventually. With no friends, no family and the rest of Priwen wanting him dead there is only one place that McCullum can turn.

Growing up in the Guard, Geoffrey had witnessed first had the consequences of forming attachments. People you loved turned away from the dark, or else marched to their deaths as dutiful soldiers, and to keep a pet would be tempting fate. Leading the Guard was an even lonelier affair.
Despite that, when Geoffrey stumbles across a wounded leech of a different nature he can't stop himself growing attached.
