Mike Wheeler is still his best friend. That’s the problem, and maybe the answer.

An Age Reversal AU, excluding Erica Sinclair, Holly Wheeler, and Eddie Munson, where The Party are the older group and the Babysitters/Teenagers are the younger group. Also somewhat of a Role-Reversal in the case of Dustin and Steve, in which Steve is the kid that needs help and Dustin gets him out of it, but it’s still Dustin doing the adoption. Will still went to the Upside Down, but Steve was taken instead of Barb, but he lived. The Party still went after Will, and Jonathan and Nancy still fought the Demogorgon, but instead with Barb too and in the Upside Down rescuing Steve. The story starts Mid-to-End of Season 1-ish.

Summary
This takes place as if the events of season four killed Vecna for good. Max healed after the Earthquake, Vecna dies after he gets flammed by Nancy walk em down Wheeler. The Byers family, including Hopper after he was rescued, continued to live in Lenora for two years after. But during the summer of 1988, right before El and Will’s senior year, they decided to move back to Hawkins when Joyce’s old home went back up on the market. The group rejoiced with the return of two of their closest friends, but nothing will be the same as it was before. Now, with Will back in town, old memories and old feelings towards a certain friend come rushing back.

But really, if he’s honest, it’s the way Will’s shoulders have started to hunch in on themselves, like he’s trying to disappear himself from the room. Eddie calls it the Lost Sheep Radar, that feeling that tells you hey, that person is drowning. Help. Gareth’s never felt it before, but he feels it now, the flutter in his gut, the warmth up his neck. Whatever it is, that’s the reason he’s suddenly clearing his throat and opening his mouth without thinking…a thing that always ends up getting him in trouble.

Originally, I had this on Wattpad under the same name, so the first 2 chapters are there. But I decided to discontinue it on there, and continue it here. It moves very very quickly, but I don’t really care.

It felt so freeing to be able to look at Mike and just see his best friend. To be able to touch him and comfort him without wishing it meant more than it did. To be able to just laugh with him again. To be able to say he was happy for him and El without it being a lie. To be able to admit, if only to himself, that the way Mike treated him the last couple years wasn’t okay. He no longer felt the need to make excuses for his behavior.
Now, though, Will has a Gareth-shaped problem in his life with no idea how to go about making a move or even how to find out if making a move would get him punched or not.

Gareth knows he’s right. He should just talk to Will. Get to know him. Be his friend.
But, it’s hard. Every time he sees him, he can feel his stomach flip and his face get hot. He just knows that if he even attempted talking to him, he’d say something so stupid he’d have to move states, maybe even out of the country.
He’s never been very smooth. Pretty boys like Will just made it worse.
