The first duel, also traditional (if only among those families called to the Dark), is next. Mrs Weasley had loudly protested its inclusion, relenting only when Harry told her he’d demanded it himself. He needs it, if he’s going to do this right, and he’s determined to do it right. Voldemort values him as he values any of his horcruxes. In making sure Harry understood what this meant, Snape was relentless. And what it means is this: Voldemort does not love him. Voldemort does not particularly want him, either.
But Harry is going to make him.

“Potter,” Riddle says, and he actually sounds… nice. This is growing more suspicious by the second. “May I escort you to class?”
Ron snorts, not even attempting to disguise the sound.
“You’re joking, right?” he asks, leaning forward to glare up at the other boy, “Fuck off, Riddle. Harry doesn’t need an escort from you.”
Harry watches Riddle’s face carefully. His expression sours, but only for a moment before it’s smooth again. He smiles, and if Harry didn't know better, he might call it charming.

He goes back to the Gryffindor dorms with a vial — one of his own, he wouldn’t dare to touch Snape’s vials, wouldn’t dare to steal from him — full of a transparent liquid, much like water. This would do the trick, this would end the pain he’s feeling.
He’s going to drink it before going to sleep. But… something. He doesn’t, halts just as the vial is inches away from his mouth.
He rips a piece of paper from one of his notebooks, writing down:
-Your name is Harry Potter.
-You were born on July 31st, 1980.
-Your parents, Lily and James Potter, died when you were a baby, so you won’t meet them.
-You’re a wizard.
There are many other things he doesn’t want to burn inside his head when he drinks the potion, but he doesn’t write them. These are enough.
