Will doesn’t have anything to lose anymore, and Mike can’t lose him. The two go hurtling towards an inevitable precipice where the only option might be to go tumbling down together, limbs grappling for each other, flesh melding, and heartbeats syncing in time.

Will doesn’t know much about the boy, except that his name is Mike and his father is the pastor.
“What?” He replies, pulling the cigarette from his lips and lightly blowing the smoke from his mouth. “Just because my dad is the pastor, you think I can’t enjoy a cigarette?

Will Byers is no stranger to religious guilt. He carries it everywhere he goes, and it’s starting to weigh him down.
When he meets Mike Wheeler, the pastor’s son, he realizes there is more to life than just fearing God, and it’s much scarier.

Mike grins so widely that he displays each one of his baby teeth. "Open it," he says. "It's a card. I made it for you."
When Will gingerly peels the birthday card open, Mike’s uneven handwriting is displayed across the page.
The p’s in happy are backwards, the y wobbly and curled at the end, and the k in Mike is also flipped the wrong way. The word birthday is etched in their kindergarten teacher’s steady print, and it seems like she'd also added the punctuation for him.
