“Y’know, I’ve been thinking…” Vi hesitates, holding her sister in her arms. “What if the monsters aren’t even monsters at all? What if they’re trying to protect us from something even scarier?”“Never thought of it like that,” Powder mumbles and tilts her head to look up at her. “But what’s scarier than the monsters?”
“Y’know, the bad guys. The enforcers. The ones who took everything away. Maybe the monsters are trying to protect us from them.”
“But… if they do, then… why do they have to scare us?”
“Maybe they’re just really bad at talking. Maybe scaring is the only thing they’re good at, so… they scare you without meaning to.”
The gears in Powder’s head start cranking, so Vi takes the chance to steal the monster picture from her side.
She sketches a stick figure with fiery pink hair and a shorter blue stick figure beside her. Both are somehow even more lopsided and shapeless than Powder’s drawings.
Lastly, she crosses two 'X’s' over the monster's eyes, the same way her little sister did before.
Vi displays the paper back to Powder.
“We’re in this together, Pow. You’re not alone. And I’m not gonna let these idiots get you. Monsters or enforcers.”

Rivet never could've imagined herself turning out like this.Never in a million years.
Her pupils grazed the junk pile her home had become. It looked no different than the heaps of trash on Torren IV.
She caught sight of her battered reflection on her widescreen TV. A tiny, insignificant speck surrounded by debris and broken machinery.
So pathetic. A shell of her former self. Like that massive robot had taken more than just her arm. Like it had ripped her soul out of her body that day.
She wondered if she would ever get it back.
"Guess Mort was right," Rivet cracked a smile, forced and unfulfilled. "You really don't know what you have 'til it's gone…"

"By the time I finally took action, the emperor's rule was too big. He kept winning, and I kept losing. It almost became a sick game at some point. He knew how bad I wanted to win, and he kept me alive to torment me for it. Dangle victory in my eyes, and all that."
Rivet huffed, feeling as if a weight had lifted from her chest. "I'm so glad that the bastard's gone."
She risked a glance at Ratchet again. "Thanks for… helping me get rid of him. Now he's right where he belongs, getting eaten by a giant squid monster, or whatever. Good riddance." She hopped off the bench, rubbing her hand over her face. "Anyways…"
Rivet tried to point her thumb outside, only to frown at the vacant spot under her right shoulder.
Ratchet seemed to understand, standing up to face her.
"Let's fix that arm, shall we?”

"I am sure she will understand." Clank reassured, folding his hands in his lap. "She would not think of you any less, I promise you. She may have a hard shell, but you have seen first hand how genuine and accepting she can be. You have nothing to lose."
"Yeah, but…" Ratchet trailed off, fiddling with his gloves.
"If I were you, I would talk to her. Tell her how you feel. There may be a chance she will understand your feelings."
"She'd kill me, wouldn't she?" Ratchet couldn't help but bite his glove hard at his own paranoid words. Even if they were pointless and false in their own way.
His fears were getting ridiculous. First dimensional travel and now this, what had his life turned into?

Vi can’t sleep. Can’t let her mind wander off to that hazy realm of vulnerability; her muscles loosened; her demons let loose from their crates. Can’t lie in bed with the cold curl of absence against her chest, where a soft head of hair used to be cradled.
Can’t let down her guard. Not when the flame of adrenaline and the push-pull of survival is the only thing keeping her upright. Not when tears coil behind her eyelids with unsettling warmth, waiting to distort her voice into sobs.
She would give anything to feel the firm pressure of Vander’s arms around her own. To rest her chin across his chest, hear the soft gravel of his voice wrapping her in comfort, the smell of pipe smoke and leather, varnish and whiskey.

Vi loses everything in one night, her whole life incinerated in blue smoke. Now, stuck in a concrete cell with nothing but her own monstrous thoughts for company, she’s forced to contend with a world in which her home, family, and purpose in life have all been ripped away by a monster with an amber eye. This is a multi-chapter character study, centering on the trauma Vi endures while in Stillwater.

She dies in the fire that burns the undercity.
The blaze eats up everything: brick and stone, mind and flesh. Everything that Violet knew before. She barely even notices when she's carried from the wastes; scooped up from bones by a man whose name she doesn’t even know. She can only stare at the enforcers, masks like bugs, standing in the wreckage with their guns and their helmets shining valiantly against the gleam of hot death.
Vi does not know that this thing searing in her chest is hate, white-hot and raw. But as she sits against a stranger's shoulder and watches the world burn red, she glares.
She will come to know hate by name in the bitter months that follow.
The fire is cruel. It destroys, it burns, it purges.
And it is Vi’s genesis.
