Dean's never had faith. That's always been Sammy. But he thinks if there were ever a time for divine intervention, it would be now. Gazing up at the few stars that aren't occluded by the haze and light pollution, he feels fucking stupid when he opens his mouth to speak.
"God, if you're out there," he says, "I don't know what to do. I... I don't have anybody left. I need some help. God, man, just give me a sign."
Closing his eyes, he sits there. He can hear far off sounds of traffic and the whistle of the wind, but not much else. He thinks he catches a distant fluttering of wings, but there's no reply. Not that he really expected one.
(S1/S2 Rewrite) After Sam refuses to help Dean find their father, Dean prays for guidance. He doesn't expect to find it in an awkward, amnesiac angel, but at least he's easy on the eyes.

Castiel's super-organized life (and even his sleep schedule) is constantly getting messed up by his childhood best friend, Dean Winchester. In their Alternate Universe of It's a Terrible Life (Season 4, Episode 17), Dean Smith (Dean Winchester) and Sam Wesson (Sam Winchester) left their nine-to-five lives behind, and here they were in Massachusetts, by the ocean. They routinely traveled, saved lives, hunted monsters, and undertook various odd jobs for money. They were still figuring out how to live and have an income while saving people. They'd managed by selling off their belongings, giving them a small financial cushion until they could find more stable means, but they were now close to running out.
An opportunity arises to hunt a siren, and Dean jumps at it. Sam wanted to hunt something other than ghosts, and the small town is paying for their entire stay, so it's a win-win...Right?
