Summary
Too few truly see the man that Arthur Morgan is; that man beneath the gruff threats and dangerous robberies. Fewer still see the heart that beats beneath that rough façade, to the soul beneath that is rarely seen and often scoffed as a weakness instead of an intrinsic part of him. Javier has watched long, observed and understood things that no others have bothered to, and he has developed something of an obsession with unravelling the strongest man of the Van der Linde gang.

“There’re folk about,” Arthur mumbles around the cigarette, shifted along his lips under this mild anxiety, this uncertainty that manifests each time fondness or attraction is directed at him. “Don’t think it’s right, botherin’ them.”
Propriety’s shallow standards fuel his reluctance then, not aversion to the idea or act; this is good. It allows Javier to reach up and pinch that shifting cigarette between two fingers, slow in drawing the filtered length from his lips. “There is no other time for us,” he replies, turning the cigarette between his fingers to look at the ember, the smoke that drifts from it. “We have only the night, only these moments, to speak and perhaps teach you that there is more to life than what you sacrifice.”

Summary
The van der Linde gang is just that; a gang. They aren't saints, not a one of them.
When Hosea meets Bessie, he moves on from his relationship with Dutch. Dutch would have been understanding, had Hosea bothered to give him a goodbye. There's plenty of emotions when Hosea returns to camp after a year away with his wife. As the gang grows, Dutch meets Annabelle, and forms his one time alliance with Colm. After loss, comes the feeling of hopelessness. Hopelessness that the gang is determined to overcome; determined to ensure that it doesn't last forever.
This follows the story of the van der Linde gang over the course of a few years, how Hosea finds Bessie, how Dutch loses Annabelle, how Hosea loses Bessie, and how the two of them make amends, and find eachother again.

The Van der Linde gang has gone through a lifetime of grief over the course of just a few days, licking their wounds after the failed Blackwater heist and attempting to get back to business as usual. Javier is no stranger to these aches and pains: he copes by treasuring every moment he's given, even as bad habits, old and new, start to bloom.
He might be able to tame them with a song, if he can keep from pulling open old wounds again and bleeding out.

Is he dying?
He knows he’s dying, what a silly thought.
Silly.
Just like his life, all those years, everything he did is..
Foolish.
Did he do enough? Did he see enough, make up enough for all those terrible things he did so blindly? He tried so hard to be good towards the end. He tried so hard to be happy in this life, yet it only hurts now.
He wants to be happy again.
Arthur is found on the brink of death, The few remaining members of the gang attempt to heal alongside Arthur, but the damage has been done and nerves are stretched thin as they try to move on from their past.
