I’m right here, it’s okay.” Sam words dripped with worry, the amount of panic in his voice only gradually building as he tried keeping it to a minimum to keep them calm.

His eyes squinted at the pain of staring at the screen for too long. Closing them for a second, he pushed himself in his chair to move over to another section of his workshop.
Sonic had been gone traveling the world again, otherwise he wouldn’t have done that all-nighter. Not under Sonic’s watch anyway. The hedgehog refused the kit to sacrifice his health, even if the world was at stake and Tails thought it was worth it.
He stared into the tech’s glass, the computer’s light helped a reflection of a tired sleep-deprived pale fox stare back.
His fur was matted and messy. Dark scary eyebags had rimmed his eyes. He looked sickly.
Boy, what was Sonic going to do if he saw him like this?
But Tails knew his older brother better, usually Sonic would travel for three weeks max. So he still had plenty of time to fix himself up and make it seem like he didn’t almost kill himself before-

I settled down beside him, pulling the covers up to my chin, and my teeth began to rattle again and a strange near-nauseous quiver twitched in the center of my abdomen before Boris’ hand thumped me directly on my stomach. It stayed there, the bitten nail beds and the scabs on the corners rasping against the fabric of the sheet, and he patted me in a mildly condescending way.
But I know he didn’t mean it that way. Because I knew Boris, and he knew me.
“Back to bed.”
He said, in a lilting, amused mumble, and he was still just as fucked up as I was.
That was the first time he’d brought me back to reality, and every time after I never forgot the way his hand felt that day. Warm through the barrier, steadying and grounding, and if I grabbed it too quick and held on too hard, he didn’t say a damn thing.
