Ratthi bounced up to me with a concerning smile. About fifteen percent of that time, that smile came before an invitation to something I wanted — a new musical, a new serial, some event where my humans (and only my humans) would be present. Another twenty percent of the time, that smile came ahead of something I didn’t mind doing, and so would participate in for Ratthi’s sake.
The other sixty-five percent, it was something I very much did not want to do, but would, for Ratthi’s sake.

My SecUnit is pacing in the navigation deck. I'm about to ping it when .03 seconds after coming online, I notice something has partitioned off part of my system.
There is an unknown virus in my system.
I attempt to purge it from the system at the same time I hear SecUnit over the feed.
"Do not panic and do not do anything rash until you know what's happening. We're all safe and accounted for."

That was true. They weren’t my clients. But they used to be, and the thought of them going off by themselves to get chewed on by hostile fauna or whatever was doing funny things to my performance reliability.
I didn’t say that out loud, but ART knew I was thinking it anyway, because it’s a monster.
“For a construct that claims to hate its function, you are remarkably dedicated to it.” ART does this thing sometimes where it says something that sounds like a compliment but in such an obnoxious tone that it feels like an insult anyway.
“Fuck off, ART.”
“You fuck off.”

The humans were going to want to know what a combat override module was, what it did, how it worked, and most importantly, why it hadn't worked on me. I could answer the first three things just fine, but short of telling my already-jittery clients I was hacked ("so I'm actually one of those scary rogue units you've heard so much about, but the good news is that a combat override module can't hijack a governor module that doesn't work!"), that last thing was going to be a big problem.

“I’m sorry, did you say eleven years old?” Ratthi asked, because humans can’t play back bits of conversations that they didn’t hear and are always asking each other to repeat things, much to the annoyance of any contracted SecUnits being forced to listen in and record everything they say to be sold for advertising data.
“Yes,” Gurathin confirmed, and then everyone was staring at me and looking all shocked and sad and whatever.
“Constructs don’t age the same way humans do,” I reminded them, before anyone could start thinking anything stupid like oh no, Murderbot is just a little kid and little kids shouldn’t be doing security and eleven year olds shouldn’t have guns in their arms. "Eleven is old for a SecUnit. Most of my inorganics are already past warranty.”
Except, because I’m an idiot, that didn’t make it better. It actually made it worse, because now even Dr. Mensah was making a concerned face at me.Bookmarked by Boulderfly
