Summary
After a rabies exposure, the virus must travel to the brain before it can cause symptoms. Therefore, the incubation period may last for weeks to months depending on several factors such as location of the exposure site (in relation to the brain) and age; in extremely rare cases it could be dormant for years.
Rumi thinks about this one frequently, lying in bed at night; the idea that you could be wasting away at any moment in your life. A poison in your veins with you none the wiser– like a ticking bomb just waiting to go off.
You would need to get bit or scratched first, of course, and if you took the right precautions you would likely never know. And Rumi has never been bitten anyway. She’s fine.

“Yeah, that was before the semester started.” And before she saw his rate my professor reviews. And before he assigned them a giant group project, and then stuck her in a group with Rumi, who just so happens to be so hot that Zoey can’t think straight when she’s around her.

Shut the fuck up, she thinks back, furiously scribbling notes on her music sheet.

In truth, she had been performing warmup exercises in the shower that morning, as she often did before rehearsals, and her voice had given out every time she tried to sing above the staff. Then her middle range went too, and her low range.
She currently couldn’t get her voice to produce a single note.
Now she sat on her bed, legs crossed, trying to meditate. She had a horrible, sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach that she knew the solution to her current problem, but she wasn’t sure she had the courage to go through with it."
