Summary
Most people would have learned of their partner’s disappearance, heading out into the field, via a note. A telegram sent to a local office. Perhaps an off-handed, nearly forgotten, reminder at the next meeting after they’d spent weeks in distress assuming the worst. Betrayal. Barbarity. Bereavement.
Most people didn’t get Kit Snicket, standing in their kitchen, being precious about their feelings. Reaching into one of the many deep pockets in her coat, rifling about for something, and waiting until she found whatever it was to answer. Leaving Olivia and the percolator in one last moment of invaluable anticipation.
“Four months,” Kit finally said, leaning against the counter, with a frankness that showed exactly how little she approved of such things herself. The coffeemaker, having completed its task, chose that precise moment to fall into silence as if mutually shocked by the news. “He’s undercover. Here, if you’ll believe it...but he will write.”

Summary
Ella Ashmore, undeniably, was dead. He wouldn’t live in denial of such a thing. It wouldn’t be useful.
Her life had ended.
And yet she wore pearls in her hair, now, and crowns of feathery green stone.
She was wrapped in fine gowns by girls who discreetly rubbed their palms together as they walked up a great many stairs to her chambers each morning so as to avoid her discomfort.
She smiled with a practiced ease and spoke cleanly and crisply from atop her gilded throne. She had all her teeth (and no new ones) which remained only as sharp as they’d been before (which wasn’t all that much).
Sometimes, she had him check. Had him count as she tipped her head back. Had him swear on his name as to whether anything looked any different. It hadn’t in all the times he’d checked but he never rolled his eyes at her request.
(AKA Ella Ashmore was only mostly dead...and of all people Tadius is, surprising nobody, pretty okay with that).

Summary
When asked about her coworker, Thad, the first thing Emma Perkins would say was that they weren’t friends. Like, who could be friends with a guy like that? She might say it with a wry turn to her smile, and might be remembering that time he drove her home from the mechanic, but it would be true all the same. Like, c’mon, Dude, it was just a coffee shop.
When asked about his coworker, Ella, Paul Matthews’ first question would be: who? They’d worked in different office suites within CCRP’s labyrinthian construction and it wasn’t like anybody was still talking about The Ashmore Foundation, not-so-recently acquired anymore, and the not-so-mysterious death of its former CEO. They’d shared an elevator only once and not said a word to each other.
Neither she nor Thad had much to do with the big picture stuff going on. They were more of a...subplot at the end of the world. A b-side that didn’t merit much discussion, so the story goes.

Summary
It looks worse than it is, he tells people with a dry sort of chuckle to put any listeners at ease, because they are somewhat paradoxical in nature.
The words and the old wounds and the man they’ve been painted onto for years.
The thought of his pain and the way he wears his hair.
The way he trims his beard and keeps his teeth clean and how he must have screamed.
(AKA There are three stories Tadius tells in regards to what happened to him on the road that night. A beautiful lie. The ugly truth. And something in between).

Summary
As Tadius stands under the tossing branches of The Old Oak tree, the day bright to the point of almost seeming to shout in jubilation, he tells himself some things do not have to change just because you get everything you’ve ever wanted.
/
There’s something undoubtedly lighter about Tadius, the prince’s man (or, possibly, now her man she thinks with a strange sort of thrill) as he stands a bit behind her.
(AKA The first of my drabbles about Tadius, a werewolf who once had a whole system in place before he got everything he ever wanted).

Summary
At first it had been hard to even realize they were there once everything was over. To hear more than a wayward, discordant laugh down a hallway. To see more than a few eyes graffitied on people’s lockers. To feel this weird clench in your stomach, hunger so intense you’d have thought you skipped breakfast and lunch and would do just about anything to make it stop, and shrug it off.
But then...well, in Hatchetfield High, people talk. People see things. And the things that look like people, well, they get what they want once they've been let in. And there isn't much anybody can do about it if they can't handle one measly ghost.

“He wants to be prom king,” Pete said into his hands. "That can't be good for the laws of reality, can it?"
"At least nobody here can spell Wiggog Y'rath," Steph offered, unsurely. "He won't be a write in."

Summary
Tabitha had taken to wearing a coat so bulky you couldn’t see the shapes of her body even in the summer, to sneering when someone made eye-contact because it was the fastest way to get them to stop looking at her, and to not touching anyone unless it was strictly necessary. To seeing each day as an arbitrary obstacle that had to be overcome until she finally reached the rest of her life. The part that would, in theory, actually matter.
But when she sneered at Stella to go run lines with her little friends and snatched her hand away (still hot in the palm and hideous in the feeling of her own skin), all she’d gotten was Stella looking pitiful because Reese had a doctor’s excuse to avoid after school rehearsals (and he was starting to miss more and more school) and Kaneeka had shifts at the store so all she could do was usher the night of the performance and that left Stella scene-partnerless.
She said this the same way one might discuss being stranded on a lonely highway or adrift at sea, as if that would not have been the ideal scenario.
Tabitha, and Stella, through the years.
