imagine– we have this kid on the train, the first friend harry meets, with his corned beef sandwiches and smudged nose. ron is eleven years old and he wants gryffindor, because he’s a weasley and that’s what always happens. but it doesn’t happen.
what a way to redeem slytherin house– or, god, at least complicate it. because ron is petty. he is mean and sharp and ambitious and jealous– and he is loyal to the ends of the earth. he is all those things, and he is and always has been good.
potter becomes before weasley in the alphabet, so harry says not slytherin please and gets told might as well be gryffindor. percy and fred and george are all sitting there in red and gold, ruffling the already-ruffled hair of the boy who lived, smug, and then ron sits down and the hat spits out slytherin!

“Your… preferences are quite peculiar, aren’t they.” It’s not a question.
“There are no men like me, aren’t they.” For a moment he thinks he shouldn’t have said it. But then there’s a split moment when they just stare at each other and then two things happen.
First, one of Brienne’s hands moves from his hip, and the absence of the slight pain he had been feeling feels somehow very, very sharp. Second, her lips curl up in a small, fond smile that shows a hint of crooked teeth, her eyes staring straight into his.
“Well, you’re impossible. But - as it does seem that I spent my life doing impossible things, I should hope I can manage this as well.”
Or: where Jaime has preferences that he can't quite manage to discuss clearly with Brienne and it's his luck that she can figure him out anyway.

Brienne visibly swallows and gives him a look. A look that she’s given him plenty of times since they set for the Vale to see if they could really find Sansa after burying what was left of her mother. That look says please just go along with whatever I’m going to say right now.
She doesn’t even leave him time to nod. She turns to Sansa and the opens her mouth, and - what comes out of it is not what he had expected.
“We’re married,” Brienne says, her voice incredibly steady considering how bad of a liar she is, and her hand reaches out and her fingers curl around the ones of his left hand.

“She gave me three different types of damned bleach,” Jaime sighs. Brienne looks at them and at the ruined laundry – it’s not too bad of a mess after all, so she picks a medium-strength one. Then she heads for the detergents rack, grabs the right kind of soap and a box of fabric softener.
“Here,” she says when she comes back. “Soap for whites, medium strength bleach, and put also some of this. If it fails and you have to put that stuff on just when you’re at home at least it should be comfortable to wear. And put it on sixty degrees, it’s plenty enough. For the dark stuff, there’s a specific cycle. For colors, not higher than forty. And never use bleach if there are no white clothes. Clear?”
“Clear. If that PhD doesn’t work out for you, you have a future in explaining laundry to other people.”

Summary
Sharing your space and time with someone when you don’t have to hide it or when you’re not running for your life or trying to find a red haired maiden because you want to honor a promise to a dead woman who almost caused your demise after dying is – not what he’s adjusted to.
It’s probably a good thing that Brienne seems to get it, because every time she gets somewhat exasperated at how he reacts to something she just shakes her head, tells him that whatever was that he’d have done with Cersei in the same situation isn’t what she’s somehow expecting now and leaves it at that, but at the same time it’s – he doesn’t want to say tiring because it’s not, but he feels like he’s treading completely new waters all the time and when you’ve thought most of your life that loving someone means that things go in a certain way, finding out that it can be completely different can and will make you question a lot of things, and it wasn’t what he had expected.
