Summary
“You’re my kid, Buck. I’m biased, of course I think you’re easy to love.”
And there’s something in there that Buck latches onto, and it wasn’t even Bobby bluntly saying that Buck was his kid.

Naturally. As might be expected. Needless to say. Obviously. Buck hadn’t expected himself to latch onto those two words, but maybe it was because Bobby had said them. And Buck hates that he doesn’t know what to do with those words, mouth opening and closing a few times before he decides that he needs more time to just think. Think of what to say and how to say it. “Of course?” Is what he ends up saying, and Bobby looks confused for a moment, trying to understand why out of anything that he had said, that was what the younger man seemed to have grasped. But then that confusion is gone just as quick as it had appeared, instead it’s replaced with a sad understanding.

“Buck’s a great dad. I would know, he’s my dad.” Chris sounds as angry as a teenager with a heart as big as his could be, Buck throwing a look over his shoulder to look at his son, the one that he would risk his life for. Had risked his life for.

Summary
When Buck heard other people talk about their gender identity and expression, he felt an overwhelming sense of confusion, envy, even anger. Knowing most people feel at home in their bodies, was an ever-present source of discomfort. To be forced into conformity, wear a dress, put on makeup, your breasts are growing- try on this bra. It was uncomfortable, anxiety-inducing and just… wrong.
Buck didn’t have a name for it until he was fourteen years old. Transgender. He had felt this presence his entire childhood, every time he attempted another dangerous stunt, got another injury to fit in with the boys in his class. There was an ever-growing discomfort, an overwhelming sense of confusion, and a hatred inside him. Buck turned to pain to cope, a way of numbing himself from the dysphoria that consumed him. Pain could be controlled, pain would mean his parents would pay him attention even for a minute. Pain was worth the blood, the cuts, the broken bones. Pain could be fixed. The only pain that couldn’t be fixed, is what tormented you on the inside.

He grips the yellow collar of that shirt, dragging Chris away from the roaring current and to his chest. Once they’re safe and secure in the center of the truck, he lets himself breathe.
“Ok,” Buck chokes. “We’re just gonna sit like this for a while, alright?”
Christopher nods, holding him just as tight. “Sounds good.”
