This call should have been routine, just another multi-car pile-up on the Freeway. They expected to find people trapped inside of their cars, a few fires that needed to be doused in case they ignited the fuel that was bound to be leaking onto the tarmac, casualties.
Buck hadn’t expected to find the face of his ex-roommate pressed up against the driver’s side window of his car, no condensation from his breath, a trickling of blood from his nose, glass from the windshield embedded in his skull.

“You okay, Christopher?” Buck asks when Christopher hasn’t said a single word since getting out of the car.
“Yeah,” Christopher says, not taking his eyes off the view. “I just feel so…small.”
Buck and Eddie exchange a quick glance.
“In a good way or a bad way?” Eddie asks.
“Good, I think,” Christopher whispers, reaching for both of their hands.
“It’s a little overwhelming, isn’t it?” Buck asks, and both Christopher and Eddie nod.
Eddie kneels down on one knee and wraps both of his arms around his son, squeezing him tightly. He’s so much taller than Eddie when he does this now, almost a full head, and still growing like a weed.
“I love you so much,” he murmurs, “and I’m so glad we’re here together.”
“Me too,” Christopher says, tugging on Buck’s hand that he’s still holding onto, the other arm wrapped around Eddie’s neck. “All three of us.”
Eddie looks up at Buck, who’s watching them with so much warmth in his eyes it takes Eddie’s breath away a little.
“Yeah,” he manages to get out, still looking at Buck, who’s smiling now.~
