“What?”
Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”
“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”
Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.
Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”
On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”
Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

The last thing Ilya expects is for the screen to fill up with a bare-chested Shane Hollander donning Ray Bands, haphazardly wrapped in a woman’s purple and gold scarf, complete with knotted fringe, his eyebrows scrunched up with concussed anger, yelling, “What the hell is wrong with you?!” he squawks.
Long gone is the adorable, euphoric patient he left in the hospital, humming as Ilya held his hand. And he’s been replaced with a grumpy, bizarrely dressed baby bird.

Shane frowned at himself in the bathroom mirror. He had a lot to be concerned about: he was in an anxiety-inducing social situation in a city that had hated him his entire NHL career, and he was pretty sure one of his best friends was keeping a secret from him.
He sighed and adjusted his jacket. The suit he had worn to and from the game against Boston earlier was one of his – and Ilya’s – favorites, but he still felt self-conscious. There weren’t any guidelines on what to wear to dinner with the woman your husband had hooked up with for years and then almost married for citizenship and whom you still felt deep flashes of jealousy toward if you let yourself think about it for too long.
