“The kitchen is ten steps to your right. Your other- yes. The room is relatively small with a compact fridge, a few overhead shelves and a countertop connecting to a stove and a sink. There’s a plate of fruit on the table and some unlabeled bottles on the counter next to the fridge. It looks.. homey, Arthur.”
John’s voice sounded almost melancholic as he reached the last sentence. Arthur hummed and trailed a hand across the counter absentmindedly. A life carved out after a decade of torture, thrown into the wringer once again. Arthur understood John’s strained reverence quite well.
No sense in lingering.
“You said, ah.. fruit. On the table. What kind?”
“A few small oranges, two blemished pears and a handful of apples. The plate is half-empty.”
“Apples, huh?”
or, before the end of everything, Arthur lingers.

“F-four. Four years.” So much of her life. Multiverses... Arthur remembers the mountains of dead Arthurs, Faroes. “She... is she... my... m-my...”
Silence.
“Is she your hmmmmmmmm?” Kayne asks.
His daughter, his blood, the one he killed – the specific wet corpse Arthur pulled out of the overflowing tub and buried – is that the girl Kayne brought here? Is that the horror he's undone? The corpse unburied? When Kayne pulled a living girl out of a tub, was she really the same girl Arthur raised?
Arthur can't bear to articulate it. The words won't come out.
“Cat got your tongue?” Kayne giggles. “You know you can ask her. She's right here, Artie. Like you wanted?”
“F-Faroe. Do you remember me?”
She makes a nervous, noncommittal sound. Death.
“It's ok, sweetie,” Uncle Kayne says, “you can tell him.”
“No,” she mumbles. “Sorry.”
“Ahahahaha! What a shame!”

Usually it’s John who pesters him into getting up and heading home before it gets too late, (Arthur, we’ll miss the train tomorrow; Arthur, the street cats will want to see us; Arthur, I want to go home) but tonight he is silent. Arthur stays longer.
