Summary
Clark heard it just as he stepped out the front entrance of The Daily Planet’s building. The sun had already set, a chilly autumn breeze dragging through his coat. It had been a late evening for him, catching up on drafts for his next few articles before some other emergency stole his attention from his work.
“Kal-el.”
He straightened, perking towards Gotham. Something cold gripped his heart as he listened for that familiar heartbeat. The voice was unmistakable; low, rough, and steady, one that grounded Clark almost as quick as Ma’s. In battle, hearing it usually meant there was a plan, that Clark could worry a little less about details; because the man he trusted the most – with his life and the lives of his family – had it under control. It soothed Clark when he faltered, bolstered him when his strength wavered, and steadied him when he teetered on the edge of sensory madness.
And that voice sounded afraid.
Clark was suited up and hurtling through the air towards Gotham before Bruce whispered again.
“Kal–” came his quiet gasp. “I’m sorry.”

"Mr. Kent," Wayne greets, nodding in his direction. "I trust your trip to Gotham went well."
Bruce Wayne—not Wayne Enterprises, Bruce Wayne himself—had bought Clark a ticket on a Greyhound bus to Gotham. They were one of the only companies still routing buses through the city after the flood, and to Clark's knowledge travel restrictions still hadn't lifted as outside aid trucks made their way in. It wasn't nearly as bad as the direct aftermath of the incident, but it had tempered Clark's expectations upon heading into Gotham.
"It was good. You're sure you don't want to hear the questions beforehand?" Clark asks.

"Nonsense. I never agreed to that." Bruce grabbed his car keys and rushed to the filming scene, as if he was a hurricane crush the story Clark made up for the TV Show--Mismatch. -

Clark tried really hard to throw the flowers out all morning, he really did, but then he could hear his mother's voice in his head telling him not to be ungrateful for a gift and that they were probably really expensive and Mr Wayne had obviously gone to some effort for him, and so they stayed on the corner of his desk all day as a mark of shame for Lois to giggle at.
Clark just wants to write a story about Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne has other ideas.
