and more than that, the writing style is incredibly impressive as a believable stream of thought--allowing the reader to notice and solve the mystery at Dean's pace based on what hints he notices.1000/10

“You said no?” Steve guesses. He’s not ashamed to admit that his knees are more than a little weak with relief that Hydra’s plan failed.
“With a punch to the dick.”
Steve laughs and nuzzles Bucky’s temple, drawn in by his scent. “No wonder he couldn’t stand straight.”
“Not a good day for Rumlow. I broke his dick, you broke his face.”
Bucky's gone into a forced heat and needs Steve to knot him. Steve's been secretly in love with Bucky since they were kids. That's it. That's the fic.

Really good!
But mostly depressing
Like be prepared to be deep in the feels for the whole thingAlso, it doesn’t get hung up on plot specifics. It’s clever, and there’s no massiv, egregious leaps in narrative logic. But certainly brushes over transitions. And for all that it brings up plot points, the point is never to resolve them. It’s purely focused on the emotional impact of them
But this is still really, really good
I’d say: 9.9/10
It’s got a magic quality to it, but there’s just a little something missing

OKAY!
So. This is great, mostly.
Premise = awesome
Characters = fantastic
Theming / Symbolism = God-tier
Plot = Front-loaded with awesome, then fizzles out into meh...This story has so much going for it, but it obviously bit off more than it could chew.
It's really the last chapters that are the failing.This story tries to do two different endings, one "Everybody Lives Happy Ending" and one "Tragic Death With Bittersweet Hope Ending"
Neither of these endings is actually any good for the story. The plot is rushed and stops making sense and characters start acting dumb as hell for literally no reason.
The thing is, there's so much emotional heart here, but the plot is the net the holds all that squishy sappy stuff together. Once that started unraveling, the meaning of the emotional moments drains away.I really loved the beginning of this story. It is an AMAZING start to an adventure and introduces so many interesting plot points and observations. It really dives deep into the characters of Steve and Bucky, too!
But it just... couldn't stick the landing. And it's a real shame. Because the only thing worse than reading a story that's mediocre all the way through, is reading one that had the potential for supreme, unforgettable greatness but squandered it.

“What’s the plural for a group of Steves?” asks Natasha, and it’s weirdly comforting that the question has a hint of whimsical hysteria to it. Good, Bucky’s not the only one who’s not dealing well with all of this.
“A clusterfuck,” he says. “A clusterfuck of Steves.”
Despite how little sense his life has made since he got on a battlefield to fight a bunch of aliens, Bucky's pretty sure he knows exactly what's happened when a much older Steve appears after the mission to return the Infinity Stones: he left Bucky behind to get his much deserved happily ever after in the past. Only then another Steve shows up, and another. And Bucky realizes he still hasn't got any idea what's going on.
What he does have is a whole lot of Steves, a fraught relationship with his own Steve, and tentative plans to leave. But the more Bucky talks to all these different versions of Steve, the more he begins to wonder if leaving really is what's best for him and his Steve, or if there's a way to make something new out of their long friendship.

“I want…” Sam says, eyes flicking down to Dean’s lips and Dean knows when something is too good to be true, knows that this can’t possibly be real, knows—
“Christo.” Dean rasps, just before Sam’s lips land on his, eyes open wide. Sam’s eyes flash black.
“Whoops,” Sam says casually. A thread of tension stretches between them, almost interminable, and then they both move at once. The demon in Sam’s body slams Dean back, and Dean crashes against the bar.

His insides feel shaky and trembling like a small bird is trying to tear its way out, his fingers have started to lose both colour and feeling, and he can feel his thoughts slowing to a crawl. He’d hoped he’d have longer before hypothermia started to kick in.
They’re going to die in here.
Dean turns the dial again. Opens his mouth, asks:
“Garth? Anyone copy?”
Or: After a hunt gone wrong with Sam injured and a clock running out for Dean, Dean tries to reach Garth before it's too late.

So this is good. It’s good story telling, fantastic writing, actual talent. It’s great. However… the characterization is just a little flat. Sometimes, it fits so well it’s like watching the show, and then sometimes it kinda loses it.
While it has fantastic moments, the story as a whole comes just shy of real emotional resonance. It was good! But I can’t see myself revisiting it.
