Summary
This series begins from a reimagining of the last mission in chapter 6, where Arthur does not have tuberculosis but things still go poorly. Aside from the first one-shot, this series is largely about recovery from grief and trauma, redemption through a means other than death, and giving characters the happy endings they deserve.

“A wife?” Arthur narrows his eyes. “A woman?” Both men looking at each other, too sober, too painfully honest. "I don’t want that for you.”
“What do you want for me?” Charles thinks his voice must betray him.
“It’s selfish,” Arthur breathes.
“Tell me anyway.”
“Want you to stay with me. With us, I mean. Don’t want you to leave ever.”
Charles gets it now. Arthur loves him just not in the way Charles loves him back. Arthur loves him as a companion, a dearest friend. This is how men are supposed to love each other.
“Okay,” Charles says matter-of-factly, and pulls his shirt over his head. “I won’t leave ever. Let’s get some sleep.”:::::::
Charles has a bad night with a working girl. Arthur, secretly desperately in love with him, hears it all.
About sex, about shame, about masculinity, about language and labels, about love, LOVE obviously.

Summary
Charles has shared more than he is used to with Arthur and, in turn, Arthur has done the same. Charles knows Arthur loves Hosea and Dutch like his fathers, John like his brother. He knows Arthur has had his heart broken in the past, even if he doesn’t know by who. He knows he wears his hat like a suit of armour and tugs it down whenever he’s feeling vulnerable.
He knows his journal is his most prized possession.
So the first time Arthur leaves his journal in plain view of Charles, it stumps him a bit.
