“Sleep. I watch,” he warbles from his post at the door. The first thing he’s said to me in hours. We haven’t talked about anything yet, aside from his pushing to prove I wasn’t hiding more contraband. I scowl at him.
“Don’t want to.” I feel like one of my kids with the level of petulance that seeps into my voice. I miss my kids. I miss having a place. I have a place here, I need to accept it’s just… Different. Still, I’m not gonna listen to Rocky right now.
Rocky grumbles at me. “Scientists say Grace hasn’t slept in 32.6 hours.” Jeez, has it really been that long? I don’t think I’ve had an all-nighter that bad since college. “Cognitive impairment begins after only 24. Bad decisions, dangerous thoughts like you mention. Why you are sick.”
“You left me.” I didn’t mean to say that. Too late.
or Grace is having a hard time adjusting to life on Erid, and it only gets worse when Rocky disappears. They work it out.

Grace furrowed his brow as he thought. There weren’t any other words in that sentence right before his name that Rocky should know by this point. With a start, Grace came to a possible word.
“Ryland?” Grace asked, tilting his head to the side.
[Yes!] Rocky answered. It was followed by the musical sounds that was most likely how it was translated to eridian. [Word before Grace name. What does word mean, question?]

Summary
Rocky visits Grace's life support quarters with some exciting news, some time into his recovery on Erid---the biodome habitat has finally been completed.
It takes a step through the airlock and sinks down into rough sand and pebbles. I chirp and hop down after it. Grace has not seen the biodome yet, but neither have I, and in my enthusiasm I dart slightly ahead.
Grace inhales so sharply that I turn to hear him better in a panic. “Grace? Grace, what is wrong? You are hurt?”
My assumption is quickly corrected when, without warning, it bolts.

“Grace must not continue to have nightmare,” he states after a moment, “nightmare make sleep bad. Bad sleep bad bad bad for human health.”
”I know,” I assure him, my voice now sounding more like my own and less whiny, “just not sure what I can do about it. Trauma can take a lifetime to get over even at the best of times, and this,” I wave my hands around to indicate Mary and our general current situation, “is not the best of times.”
Grace is desperately touch-starved and suffering from constant nightmares about the day he was forced onto the Hail Mary against his will. Rocky will fix, and Grace will discover some deep-seated truths about himself along the way.
So basically this is me dumping everything possible onto my traumatised space cinnamon roll Ryland Grace, who is not a real human and is actually every single anxiety disorder stacked on top of one another, wearing a trenchcoat and crying. But it's OK, because Rocky is a very clever Eridian, and he will fix his leaky space blob whatever it takes. Mostly film canon but elements taken from the book. I'll leave an apology here in advance, you'll probably need it.

“Grace awake, question?” hums Rocky as I rub crust from my eyes. I shiver, curling in on myself and taking the quilt with me. It bunches up in my face and uncovers my feet. It’s wildly uncomfortable, but I’m too tired to fix it, so I just lay there in my misery.
“5 more minutes,” I groan, though it comes out more as a wheeze and barely audible. I should clear my throat, try and get rid of some of the phlegm so I can actually talk, but I can already feel myself drifting back to sleep.
Luckily, or maybe unluckily for me, Rocky has amazing hearing.

Summary
Eridian brains shut down completely when they sleep, that’s why they watch over each other during their sporadic sleep cycles. There’s absolutely no activity going on in there, except for the individual worker organisms going around and fixing things up. Eridian’s brains “reactivate” once their bodies are good and ready to wake up, and not earlier. The point is, they don’t experience anything remotely similar to human dreams.
So, how do I explain nightmares to someone who literally cannot dream?

OR, Ryland Grace is more deeply affected by their experiences with life and death than he lets on... at least while awake. As his and Rocky's mission progresses, sleep becomes something Grace dreads, for fear of what his unconscious mind will put him through. The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”
