Summary
“You haven’t changed a bit, Mike,” Will shook his head fondly and the bar around him swayed with the motion.
Will wanted to reach out and jostle him, grab him by the bicep and shake, any miniscule action to prove that Mike was real and here in this dead dive bar in Chicago and so he did just that. Without hesitation, fear of judgement or rejection, he reached for his friend's arm and grasped. Mike was warm under his palm. Warm and solid and thick and a part of Will he thought to be long dead by now wanted to burrow into the other man. Mike laid his palm over Will’s and squeezed. Long, fingers wrapped around Will’s stubbier ones.
“You have, though,” Mike said, still holding on.
-
The year is 1998 and a snow storm is ravaging downtown Chicago. After nearly a decade of next to no contact Mike and Will run into each other at one of the only bars still open in the city.

Summary
He was an overworked dog. Panting and huffing with its tongue lolling out of its maw, saliva dripping.
“Why do you feel so comfortable talking back to me and not the other dickheads in his place?” His voice rumbled through his chest, low in his throat.
Randy looked up at him, shades of blue shadows dancing over his face, “I wasn’t talking back.”
“Yeah, you were. Good. That's how you should respond when people fuck with you. Otherwise, you send a message that you can be fucked with,” Benson said, raising his eyebrows, “And, Randy, you have a giant neon sign flashing above your head twenty four seven that says Fuck With Me.”

Benson and Randy have their first real conversation under slightly less pressing circumstances.

Summary
In which we explore some of the off-screen time between game scenes. Team bonding, dispatching, character studies, and various donuts eaten while on the job. Focus is mostly platonic and team-dynamics because I really really want more screen time with the other members of Z-Team... but I am also an action and angst writer, so buckle up. Not ACTUALLY writing a non-romantic Robert so much as Robert who is too fucking exhausted to do anything about, like, dating in Season 1? Something like that. The one-sided crushes go fucking HARD tho.

Summary
Randy almost doesn’t understand how it happened, even though he’s the one who started it. Three weeks ago he’d never had sex with anyone, had never thought about doing it with a guy, didn’t think much about doing it at all. And maybe that means there’s something wrong with him, but he’s not stupid—he understands that Benson is into him. And if Randy can use that to keep him calm, keep them on track for a little while, maybe Benson will come back to himself. Will shake off the shock, and tell Randy what the plan is.

Summary
It’s been almost twenty years since Benson Roche was sentenced to carry out four life sentences at G.H. Lemoine Correctional. Twenty-one since he had murdered his and Randy’s coworkers on a cool and bland January morning, since he had beaten Elliot Sheppard to death in the middle of Bill Snyder Elementary’s parking lot, had taken Miss Beard hostage only at Randy’s insistence he not kill her, had shot Marsha at the end of her shift at the Kutzburg Diner. Twenty-one years since he had forced Randy to drive around town with him for hours, laughing at him, maybe believing it was with him—driving around and never once trying to leave town, intent only on curing Randy of all that made him the most pathetic 21-year-old he had ever seen. Twenty-one years since he gave Randy the small white divot scars on either side of his shoulder that still twinge now and again in a flutter of permanently-confused nerves.
Twenty-one years since he became Randy’s captor. Twenty-one years since he became Randy’s only friend in the world, if only for a day. Since he had created the clean and even division of years in Randy’s life — Before Benson and anno Domini nostri Benson Roche.
In seven months, he'll be eligible for parole.

Summary
Benson wasn’t fucking clueless. He knew, by now, that this was more than just a simple fascination with an interesting coworker. But his peace of mind depended upon him ignoring a lot of uncomfortable truths.
Or: 5 moments from Benson and Randy's weird, sad year of working together.
