Summary
It’d been the last time they were all together, a moment of peace before their guests arrived at the manor. Aline, at her piano. Clea, at her harp. Verso played the guitar with the same heartbreaking earnestness he brought to every instrument. Renoir took up his accordion.
Their son held the violin out to his sister, winking. “Your choice. I wrote a vocal accompaniment if you’d prefer that.”
Her voice carried through the hall beautifully, a perfect complement to the instrumental composition. When the song ended, Aline nearly begged them to begin again. They could live in this moment a little longer. They could stay here.
But songs ended.

Or: Verso learns the truth of his family's existence. He takes it badly.
Five times Verso tried to get Aline to leave the Canvas. And the one time he succeeded.

Summary
The Dessendre Manor was quiet. Too quiet. Maman and Papa had taken Clea to one of their boring council meetings, leaving Verso alone and in charge of his baby sister. He was nearly a grown man himself now, he could surely handle taking care of his seven-year-old sister. Surely.
Verso is left in charge as Alicia's babysitter. But when the cook and the parents are out for the day, he gets the idea to make their own lunch for once.

Well, nothing she can do until the Old Gods hear her desperate plea and send her back to Winterfell months before King Robert stepped foot in the North. Now all the “what ifs” she’s spent contemplating are possible and she’s promised the Old Gods she would do anything to save her family and the people of the North even if that meant staining her honor, allying with old enemies, or entering yet another unwanted marriage.
Or the one in which the Old Gods have zero tact and Sansa is determined to keep the game of thrones from ruining her family or the North.

“The other paintings made you feel nice,” Maman’s mouth curves around the word like it’s an insult. “What do these make you feel?”
There is a sketch of Maman—decades younger—sipping coffee in a cafe. Another sketch of Papa, robe open at the chest, settled by the fire with Monoco. Papa in profile; Maman in a sunhat in the garden. Papa glaring, Clea set on one hip, Verso on the other. Maman, asleep with Alicia nestled against her breasts. Hundreds of little moments committed to paper, almost thoughtlessly, none of the pomp or circumstance of their paintings.
“Loved,” Alicia murmurs.
(Aline is cleaning out the family's art. Alicia stumbles across a collection and wonders why it's locked away.)

She flushes. “I don’t read that much, Papa.”

Renoir has gathered her body into his lap. She watches, fascinated, as his hand moves beneath her rucked-up skirt. He tucks his chin over her shoulder, smirking, flicking his eyes down to watch the lazy motion of his wrist.

You’re here to slay her. If you don’t, it will be the end of the world.
So, Renoir walks. Up the path until he finds the little building at its end, its exterior unremarkable. He knows, in that instinctual way a prey animal feels eyes upon it, that he has been here before. He’s been here so many times.
Or: Renoir and Aline attempt to chase down a Writer. They're trapped in a Manuscript, forced to play out the same scenes, over and over. They cannot stop hurting each another.

For the ungodly number of books they have in the house, Maman is not terribly interested in literature. Alicia finds it strange. Almost defensively, she says, “Sketches, too. It’s not all writing.”
Maman sets her pencil down, arching a brow. Her eyes widen, taking in Alicia’s appearance. “What have you been—” she sputters, reaching out to pluck stray leaves from her hair. At least one twig, too. She holds the latter in front of her face. “Do we need more interesting groundcover to keep you out of the trees?”

Summary
There is something odd and disquieting about the aftermath of great adventures.
In the absence of happily-ever-after, all that’s left is to pick up the pieces and pray for the best. Aline is home. Alicia is home. Neither will speak to him. Renoir does not push the matter. Clea keeps him busy enough, and he is too tired to force his suit with the family. In his heart, he knows someone will say something they regret. It is better to keep apart a while longer.
And he still has his memories. Decades of moments to fall back on, to rely on, while they heal.
Or: family moments before the fire, and copious amounts of Renoir/Aline snippets.
