His body feels strange. There had been many scenarios vivid in his mind when he had woven his Teleportation spell with shaking fingers, but he finds himself realizing that somehow, all of them had included Caleb putting his hands on Essek’s shoulders.
Caleb, concerned and serious, a tenseness to his brow as he reinforces his wards and asks Essek if he was followed. Caleb, frustration in the set of his jaw, asking Essek why he had not come sooner. Caleb, soft-mouthed, guiding him to the closest chair.
When the room instead is quiet and dark, and then keeps staying quiet and dark, he finds it suddenly difficult to keep standing.

It’s not like Caleb hasn’t thought about it. He’s thought about it a little too much, if anything: what would happen in a situation in which the variables were only Essek, himself, some privacy, and their mutual willingness to explore each other. In that scenario, he wasn’t even asking for a bed.

He would rest and work at your command, like Astrid and Eadwulf, like your others. Your progress would be quicker, but there would be complications. He gives Astrid and Eadwulf a wide berth as he moves towards the door, as though he knows you have been contemplating springing the trap shut around him, as though the extra foot of distance might make a difference if you wished to make him stay.

Summary
If Essek were to kill Caleb, he would do it with a spell.
None of the intimate agony of feeling the last flutters of his heart with his own skin. He cannot even afford himself the painful honesty of knowing that if he were to do it, it would be impersonal and practiced, something Essek has done to many before and will do to many others. This knowledge is not enough to stop him imagining it.
In the months following the events of Cognouza and the Somnovem, Essek fails to come to terms with the fact that he is a dangerous man.
