The universe must have messed up, because the words curving around my wrist like the worst bracelet in the world could not possibly have been uttered by anyone tolerable, and certainly not by anyone with whom I would bother wasting my time.

Sir Simon, Knight of Salisbury, has trouble remembering his lines. They're especially hard to remember when his coworker, Knight Basilton Grimm, pins him down once a day and asks him at sword-point if he's willing to submit. Maybe if they practice their lines and Simon gets everything (read: gay thoughts about his coworker) out of his system, he might stop getting so distracted in front of the audience and Baz will stop being angry with him.

He hasn't slept in two days. He doesn’t need to sleep. His shoulder used to ache, and so did his leg, but they don’t anymore. They removed his left arm at his shoulder and his left leg below the knee (transtibial, he knows this word). That was a long time ago (or was it recently? He can't remember.) The metal is cold against his skin, but that isn’t important, because he’s always cold. He doesn’t need warmth. Warmth is something for people, and he isn’t a person.

I think at this point in my education, I could probably author a book on what Magical Shit is real and what’s made up. I would credit Penny as a co-author, because she tells me that the pink yeti that came out of the Wavering Wood was an Admirable Snowman, a magical creature that's vaguely related to the Abominable Snowman.

“Morning, love,” he breathed, voice groggy. I brought a hand up to play with his hair absently.
“I… had the weirdest dream.”

Simon's been feeling strange. He tells himself that he has no reason to be on edge; they defeated the Humdrum and the Mage, and now he's spending every day in domestic bliss with his best friend and boyfriend.
But something nags at him, fills his dreams with strange, vague messages that he doesn't understand.
He's stumped, and at this point he's almost able to accept it as one of those trauma-responses Penny keeps going on about.
Almost.

Today some posh git brought in an MG, forest green, soft top. Lovely original paint that's clearly been sitting out in a carpark somewhere for years just being rained on.
And that's not the worst of it. Because this car must have been running on wishes and good luck for the last six thousand miles. When I asked him where they'd been having it looked after, he said: "Honestly I don't know if Fiona ever brought it into a shop."
I held out hope. Perhaps Fiona was his senile gran. Perhaps Fiona couldn't remember where she'd taken it, or didn't keep the papers, or her friendly neighbor cleaned the spark plugs and injectors and topped up the coolant and the engine oil.
