Peter freezes. Wide-eyed, with ‘guilty’ written on his forehead in 72, bold, Times New Roman font. It takes a solid thirty seconds before he can put himself together enough to click the unmute button.
“I—no?” Peter says. His voice is startlingly high pitched and his expression is nothing short of horrified.
Damn, if that isn’t anything but a confession.

The tiefling’s voice is high-pitched, sing-song, and it’s all the warning Bren gets before he finds an arm slung over his shoulder and half a face full of curly blue hair. Weeks of traveling on the road with this… this band of misfits has made him less likely to kill them for catching him off-guard; they are loud, and obnoxious, and chaotic, and tactile. Strangely, it isn’t enough to make him regret going undercover.
Of course, nothing could make him regret that. He serves the good of the Empire, full stop.

Maybe it was the way his eyes sharpened as he looked around, mostly towards the ceiling, or how he stood taller, the way he squared his shoulders. Whatever it had been, it instantly worried him. He stood from his chair, just as the man zeroed in on something and began to walk, gait too long and hurried to be natural, one hand deep inside his coat, completely concealed.
Something deep inside Fjord, roiling in his gut, screamed at him to move.
In a single, fluid, practiced movement, the man lifted his hand. It blackened and flaked and ignited with a snap, bright with arcane flame and energy Fjord had only ever heard about in stories and urban legends.
And then an alarm went off. And the sprinklers began raining down.
