Unbeknownst to Joel, he was being watched. Observing quietly from the rear end of his truck, there was a little girl, dressed in tattered clothes and barely any taller than one of the wheels that she was standing beside. “Hey!” She hollered, smiling when she watched Joel practically jump out of his skin at the sound of her voice.
Joel’s eyes darted over, quickly worming through the shadows and picking out the kid, despite how small she was. “Christ, girl,” He admonished, his heart still racing inside of his chest. “How are you so goddamn quiet?”
The girl grinned from ear to ear and then dared a step closer. “It’s a talent."
“You’re lucky it’s only me that you snuck up on,” Joel lectured.
“Yeah, ‘cause you seem so pleasant,” The girl teased. She was closer now, like one of those cats who snuck closer every time they weren’t being watched.
Joel snorted in response. “What the hell are you even doin’ out here anyway? This is the middle of nowhere.”
The girl flashed another smile. “I’m on an adventure,” She replied, grinning up at him with a missing tooth.
Joel snorted again. “What, to become roadkill?”

Much like the other day, Ellie ends up sitting on the porch steps. Joel’s back even quicker this time. Almost like he’d left his first aid supplies sitting out and ready to attend as needed.
More cleaning, this one hurts less. More gel liquid, this time rubbed in a bit better. And more bandaids, these ones something other than plain, boring beige. Not princesses either, usually the first thing adults reached for when they mixed the two factors of Little Girl and Injured together.
Nope. This guy has dinosaur bandaids.
“Dude, I fucking love dinos!”
Joel’s head swivels up, eyes going from her carefully patched up elbow to meet Ellie’s gaze. She wants to ask him how he knew. She wants to ask to see the rest of the designs in the box. She wants to tell him all of the other things she loves.
“S’pose I picked right then,” he says, almost like he’d been standing in the aisle, contemplating what exactly that might be.
“You did,” is how Ellie answers him, not bothering with a thank you.

Violet leans in.
“You wanna kiss another one?” She asks, so close she can feel the warmth of her breath against her lips.
She gets in one brief nod, her half of a sandwich tumbling out of her hand, before Violet is kissing her, and for a long, long moment, her world is Violet’s shampoo and her soft lips and the feel of her cheek beneath her palm, a perfect moment of-
“What in the hell is going on here?”
They knock heads at the harsh, angry voice, and she blinks over to find Violet’s dad standing in the doorway, glowering at them.

Joel’s plumb out of luck, it seems, because running after the dog is the little girl. She’s out of breath, still halfway laughing, and for a few seconds she doesn’t notice him. In those seconds, her face is wide open in a grin, dark hair wild and posture loose. She can’t be more than thirteen, maybe a small fourteen, and she’s clumsy in the way teenagers are right after a growth spurt. There’s a knife in Joel’s chest, the one that’s been there for twenty years, and it twists.
(or, joel accidentally gets a dog. apparently, the dog comes with a mouthy fourteen-year-old kid, and maybe also a reason for living again.)

It was useless. Abby raised it higher, which only caused Ellie to weep louder. With millions of regrets racing through her mind. Joel closed his eyes in anticipation.
"Please! He's my dad. Please, don't...don't take him from me. Please." Not by blood, but Joel was her family. At that moment, she didn't care how angry she was at him, how she tried so hard to act like she didn't need him anymore. "Joel, please get up!"
Or, What if Joel hadn't died? What if Abby spared his life? Giving Ellie and Joel a proper chance to fix their broken bond.

The first few times, he excuses it as rusty social skills, the same as Joel.
She always gravitates to his brother, after all. When she slides in at the last minute into an empty chair beside him or presses right to his side in a crowd, leaving no room for him there as well, it’s possible that she’s just nervous about being around strangers. He takes the loss and stays where he is, content that there will be plenty of time to spend time with Joel when his kid is ready to have some space.
And then the little punk pulls a chair out from under him at dinner one day when he goes to take the empty space beside his brother.
Stunned to find himself on the floor, he blinks up at a round face smiling down at him innocently.
“Oops,” she says, with poorly hidden satisfaction. “Sorry Tomtom, didn’t see you there.”
