God, Darcy misses Steve like air.
The first time she even hears his voice after his accident is a week after her return to the states from Tokyo, with her neck covered in gold and silver medals, and her All American smile screwed on tight for ABC’s four-hour morning audience. A headache is building behind her eyes and tightening her neck, and the back of her scalp starts burning with tension, too. She knows a full blown tension headache is likely in her future later today at this rate. Some enterprising PA at Good Morning America sets up an audio call between segments when one of her teammates lets slip that Darcy’s best friend missed her whole Olympic performance due to a broken wrist and surgery, and is presently on his way to Europe for the better part of an entire semester abroad.
“Darce, is that you?” Steve’s voice crackles in her earwig like he might actually be calling from his commercial plane flying over the Atlantic.
“Steve…?” She claps a hand over her mouth and struggles not to cry fat, ugly tears on national television.
