"I’ve been thinking about you,” Eliot continues, and Quentin’s heart nearly stops in his chest. Warning bells, sirens, flashing signs—this is not good. Not good.
“Well—don’t. Stop,” Quentin says. The top few buttons on Eliot's shirt are undone and how is he supposed to just be an adult and say no to this?
Eliot cracks a small smile, sliding just a little bit closer. "Don't stop?" he says.
“Eliot—just—please go back to the bar. You don’t really want this.”
Eliot frowns. “I’m a big boy, Professor,” he says, huffing out a breath. “I know what I want. The question is,” Eliot continues, Quentin holding his breath as Eliot leans into his space, “What do you want?”
Quentin’s mouth goes dry as his brain spins with acceptable responses. For you to go back to Brakebills and sober up—A nice cold glass of water—A redo of the last five years—An actual responsible adult—but what comes out is, “What I want doesn’t matter.”
Eliot’s face grows softer, the frown disappearing and his eyes searching Quentin’s face. “It does to me,” he says quietly. Cold fingers encircle Quentin's palm, and he closes his eyes as Eliot slots their fingers together and squeezes.

Quentin… can’t really interpret the look on Eliot’s face. He almost looks nauseated, like the news that Quentin and Alice’s relationship is over is somehow terrifying to him.
“Are you okay?” he asks, and something about the way he says it almost makes Quentin start crying. This, of all things. There’s a desperation there, in the sheen of Eliot’s eyes, like the thought of Quentin not being okay is deeply, viscerally painful to Eliot somehow. As if Quentin’s ever really okay. As if he’s been okay at all recently. Ha ha. Imagine a world in which he’s okay. Poor Eliot, wanting the impossible for his friend. What a beautiful heart he has. Quentin shook out the tension in his hands. He didn’t understand why it wasn’t getting any easier. For days on end he’d been trying to perfect the illumination spell the rest of his fellow First Years had nailed in a matter of hours. But no matter how he tried, Quentin couldn’t seem to make anything more than a spark.
He didn’t know what was worse: that his discipline was apparently shit at magic, or that he’d been placed in the Physical Kids’ Cottage with his ex-whatever-the-hell-they’d-been-in-undergrad because the administration didn’t know what else to do with him. He couldn’t do shit about the latter, but he figured he could at least try and get the basics of magic down before Dean Fogg realized what a grave mistake he’d made in allowing Quentin into Brakebills to begin with.
