An academy AU + Tarsus aftermath fic in which James T. Kirk ends up accidentally parentally bonded to an orphaned Vulcan child. When the father/daughter duo enroll in Star Fleet, hijinks ensue (mostly at the expense of Spock’s previously immaculate but quickly deteriorating self-control).

Enterprise is safe to fly another day. All thanks to Captain James T. Kirk's sacrifice. He's made peace with his death, even though it breaks his heart one final time to see the hurt in Spock's eyes. Still, the last thing he gets to see is the face of one of his dearest friends... until his eyes snap back open. Not in a hospital. In a shuttle as it lands at the Academy.
“Once you exit the shuttle you are free to return to your dorms. Those of you who are new, you’ll follow me to registration and physicals,” a vaguely familiar-looking officer says, and Jim’s heart stops in his chest. Surprising, considering it shouldn’t be beating at all.

Carter looked at him with such pity; he couldn't fucking stand it. “Sir, I know he's come back before, but… there was no Ascension, no Asgard, no Nox, no sarcophagus. He got hit with two zats. There's no coming back from that.”
He slumped into a chair; he ran a hand over his face. Two zats, yeah, but they'd heard the third. They just hadn't stuck around to watch.
Carter sat gently next to him. “What makes you think he's still alive, sir?”
Goddammit. He put his head in his hands. What didn't?
“I've been having these dreams.”
