Edwin’s already been screaming for so long that if he had a living throat, he would have yelled himself hoarse, but no. It’s been hours of ear-splitting screaming, and Edwin’s voice hasn’t died down; if anything, it’s gotten worse.
But it’s not the screaming that’s getting to Charles. No, it’s the begging. The Edwin Charles knows is proud. Proud to the point that he honestly goes too far sometimes. The Edwin Charles knows wouldn’t beg for anything ever. The Edwin Charles knows is so scarred from hell that iron burns don’t get any response at all.

Charles looked crushed before he’d even finished speaking. He tried to get a better hold on Edwin’s suit jacket, but he had no footing, dangling in the middle of the train as he was.

Summary
Truthfully speaking, Edwin is nearly always afraid, in some capacity or another. He can relax and laugh with Charles, certainly, but he rarely forgets the Hell-forged sword poised at his neck, ready to strike at the slightest slip up or mistake. Fear is nothing new to him.
Sometimes though, sometimes, that fear slips over into terror and his feet glue themselves to the floor. It is cruel, to be so pleased when Charles is there to jolt him free again, to delight in Charles' presence, in the midst of the danger with Edwin. But Edwin delights in it anyway.
Or: a case involving demons, dolls, and magical ghostly tortures bring Edwin's fear to the forefront, but Charles is never far behind.
