Morrible unfurls Glinda’s mind like a scroll, examining the contents of her memory the way she examined the displayed organs of the first fetal pig she ever dissected. It’s less cohesive than the innards of a pig. That’s the problem with memory bound by emotion. Love is diffuse. It so easily becomes entangled in every aspect of the human experience, regardless of whether the target was physically present or not. Extracting it with any amount of elegance can get…dicey.

At Shiz, Galinda asks Elphaba to cast a bonding spell with her so they'll never be apart. They misunderstand the ancient spell and realize too late that it doesn't enhance emotional ties, but allows them to feel every intense or intentional physical sensation the other experiences. (There's no doubt it's a spell for lovers and not best friends.) To make matters worse, the spell is irreversible. Though they spend decades separated, thanks to the spell, they're never apart. For better or for worse.

She tried not to ever say anything too sappy to Elphaba, who never knew how to accept such things gracefully, but she couldn’t help it. “I miss you,” Glinda admitted softly. Again, the line went silent for a beat too long. Glinda opened her mouth to soften the admission, but before she could, Elphaba’s quiet voice filled her ear.
“I miss you, too.”
After graduation, Elphaba and Glinda find themselves in separate cities and therefore apart for the first time in years. They keep in contact through letters, phone calls, and occasional visits. When Elphaba won’t stop being elusive about how she’s faring after being cut off financially, Glinda worries a completely appropriate amount. (She tries to offer a completely appropriate amount of help, too.)

Tell anyone she’s here? Arrest her herself? Hurt her? Take her broom away? Imprison her? Everything that could finish that sentence feels to Glinda like she’s only reminding Elphaba what she could do. “I promise you’re safe.”
Elphaba crashes onto Glinda’s balcony, and Glinda has to hide Elphaba from the world while she recovers.
