Summary
Truly, Viktor cares very little about this task. He knows, in a way so few proper uppercity citizens would admit, that the people producing the value for these Houses never have much to do with the family themselves. J has done more to earn a house name in the last year than this 'Jayce' has likely done his entire life. Viktor expects this Mr. Talis knows very little about the physicality behind all the beautiful metal crafts funding whatever pampered life he’s been living since his mysterious dismissal from the academy.

It's been nearly four years since the unfortunate break-in that led to Jayce's quiet expulsion from the Academy and, in a round about way, the beginnings of peace between Piltover and Zaun. His life is good on paper, but he mostly just feels like he's living a story half told and forgettable. So, with the business running well enough for the Academy to be within his un-sponsored means, he's finally making good on Heimerdinger's promise that he could return once his 'lesson' was learned. If only this beautiful, rude assistant would give Jayce the time of day to argue his case.

Summary
When Viktor was cajoled into attending the Halloween Fare with Jayce and Mel, he hadn't really understood the purpose of his presence on what was clearly a comically clique date. They may have all been sleeping together on occasion, but surely this was pushing their threesome kink a bit far.
Turns out, they are both adorably easy to frighten and need Viktor there to protect them. No other reason at all, just an oddly sized human shield, and really, Viktor's perfectly fine with that.

"I wanted to be there for you. When you saw her again," Astarion admits, swallowing hard on the tender bit of emotion he still finds there. He's not sure how to say this, how to thread the line of admitting his own protective feelings without causing more pain for Gale. There are things he'd worked out, from the stories Gale had told, the timing of events, the age he must have been when it all began. That's too heavy for this early evening and something Gale should bring up himself if they ever discuss it.
So, Astarion finds another bit of the reason and says instead, "You were there for me when I claimed my freedom, and I wanted... I wanted to help you claim yours."

And Jayce listens to Viktor, trusts him so much he scarcely understands how he went most of his life without evening knowing him. How he ever enjoyed himself any other way, without those sure hands on him, without those sharp eyes boring into his innermost thoughts.

Jayce's life is just about perfect. HexTech is on the verge of becoming a household name, the HexGates are set to the debut during this years Progress Day, and the last year living with and loving Viktor has made Jayce feel whole in ways he didn't know he was missing. Yet, still, that ever present worry never seems to go away.
When he returns from two weeks abroad to find Viktor behaving oddly, he starts to wonder if it really is all too good to last.
