I doubt this will come as a shock, but that worked wonders for my aging, ailing ego. I, uh…” He shoots a deferential sidelong glance at Rashid, who’s giving him a guarded look. “Wouldn’t mind if it happened again, but that’s at his discretion.”
Louis gives Rashid a look that sits somewhere at the crossroads of amusement, bafflement, and contempt. Razor-edged panic flares in Daniel’s stomach; he has no idea why such a specific cocktail of emotion should get to him when it’s aimed straight past him at someone else.
“Let me have this, Louis,” Rashid says with quiet urgency, his grasp on Daniel’s shoulder tightening. “He’ll be gone soon enough as it is.”
