"I have Ms. Kelly today," Max says, almost bitterly. "You'll be okay at lunch without me?" she says it sarcastically, like a joke, but there's an undercurrent of something else in her voice; for a moment, she almost sounds scared.
Will releases her hand, even as they walk out of the gym doors together. "Works out for me," he tells her, "I have that project for art I have to finish up anyways." He pauses, hesitates. "Will you be okay without me?"
Max takes a breath, and then gives him a shaky smile, one that doesn't quite reach her eyes. "I'll have your tape," she says, wiggling the wires of her headphones. "See you after school."

or: a shared tragedy brings max and will together for their first year of high school in hawkins. they stay together, even as their demons rise again. a s4 rewrite, in which joyce is the one who dies at the end of s3 and thus the byers + el never move.

Summary
Will stirred sleepily to the sound of voices and a heavy weight beside him.
“Whazup?” he mumbled, lifting his head off the pillow and blinking in the darkness.
“Shhh, it’s fine,” replied Mike’s soft voice, breaking through the stillness that had followed Will’s muffled question, “I’ve got this one. You can go back to sleep.”
Mike and Will take turns staying up with Holly, who has begun to have nightmares about the monsters in Hawkins. Things take a curiously domestic turn.

Summary
“Hey, Will! C’mon buddy, time to wake up and get going, okay? We’re all done here, it’s all done.”
The warbled voices began to separate from one another, like oil from water. Groaning, he blinked his eyes like a frog, one and then the other, the harsh operatory light greeting him with a menacing glow. Slowly, the blobs of color before him began to sharpen into focus, taking the form of two random people he had seen briefly before, and his mom, studying him with intensity.
“Welcome back, sleepyhead,” Joyce whispered, giving his hand a gentle squeeze, “how’re you feeling?”
“Mom,” he tried to say, but the sound that came out was a strangled grunt. Huh. Usually he has no problem speaking, but something was in his way. Gauze. Bloody gauze, specifically, was in his way. He gingerly reached a hand up to touch his cheeks, brushing against the damp dressing that was dangling between his lips. Huh. That wasn’t there before.

Will gets his wisdom teeth out and lets a few things slip while he's loopy from the anesthesia.

“I—I would tell you.” He says reflexively, but he doesn’t take it back. The words are true. He hears Mike’s breath catch and his hand twitches. “I just wouldn’t want you to– to pity me. Or see me… differently.”
“I would never.” The response is instant. “You’re strong. I’d never pity you. I… god, how do I explain?” Mike turns his body to face Will head on and grabs his hand properly. Will feels a shiver run through him, but he squeezes back all the same. “I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry, for what you’ve been through, whatever it is. But it would never, never make me look at you differently.”
“Promise?”
“I promise."
Or: Will breaks down after the events at the MAC Z and trusts Mike to help him pick up the pieces.

I heard you calling for me, even across dimensions—"
"I—I wasn't," Will cuts in, a tremor to his voice. "I never wanted any of this. You're insane!"
"—sometimes we aren't conscious of what we ask for," Henry smiles then, and his hand moves, thumb shifting to press against Will's mouth. He tightens his lips in response, thinking about that vine down his throat, frozen solid. "How do you think I knew which children to pluck from their homes, which ones to save? There is a connection between all of us that goes beyond what Brenner could do out of every number. When that gate opened, I already knew what I had to do. I had planned it for years. I dreamed of someone like you, and you, in turn, became mine—"
"Stop," Will begs.

Summary
Ever since Mike had known him, Will had bitten his tongue. When they were younger, he communicated solely in small noises and shy smiles. Not that he minded- he could read the boy like an open book.
He could almost hear his voice in the whisper of his features and body language. Where others waited in doubtful expectation for something to come from Will’s throat, Mike had no interest in it. He could read the message in the lines of Will’s furrowed brow and the nervous, darting aversion of his gaze.
OR:
Mike’s memories of when Will had selective mutism as a child, and how his communication with him through other means is proved useful, when Will gets possessed by Vecna in their final plan.

At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

Summary
"They called you Zombie Boy after I took you," Henry murmured, "didn't they? You came back from the dead, and left something in the dark, in the grave dirt. Something that made you healthy."
Slowly, Will's outstretched hand cupped Mike's jaw. Henry made Will hold him lightly, hardly grazing the skin. He stretched one of Will's fingers out to trace his nail through Mike's face, and though Will had imagined holding Mike an endless amount of times, none of them had gone like this. He'd never wanted to hold Mike like this.
"Let him go," said Will, voice thick with emotion. "You can take what you want from me, you don't need him—"
"But you do," said Henry. "You need him."
When Henry starts to visit Will in his dreams, Mike starts getting inexplicable injuries. The stranger Mike acts— the more time he spends with Will, the more Will catches him staring, the more Mike dismisses the bruises and cuts scattered across his skin— the more Will starts to wonder whether Henry is right about him.
Maybe Henry did give Will a disease, back in the Upside Down. Maybe, as he dreams, Will passes that disease on to Mike, too.

“I’m starting to understand that. Doesn’t mean I’m going to follow that rule.” Mike's voice was a challenge, but not to Will, to something else entirely.
“You’re supposed to escort me back,” Will responded.
Mike only smiled, picking a yellow flower and examining it before raising it up to Will. “Eventually.”
or; Will Byers is a ward, claimed and exploited by the Crown for a power he never chose. Mike Wheeler is a knight turned sentinel tasked with surveilling him who learns just how hard it is to follow an oath when the heart intervenes.
Together, they stand between stone and uneven land, defying silence through whispers where touches aren't allowed.

Summary
For the first time, Lucas realises that none of them had ever really talked to Will about the Upside Down. He’s sure Joyce had tried, but Will always tried to protect his mother and brother, always felt like he was a burden on a family that was barely scraping together as it was, backs bending with the strain of giving Will some semblance of a good childhood. Lucas and Max had had each other, Dustin had had Steve, and Mike and Eleven had protected each other best they could.
Will, though… had never really had anyone. Once again, Lucas feels his heart twist in guilt over how they’d treated Will the summer before last, the summer after he’d been possessed.

TOW Will Byers is run over by a car, shot, set on fire, possessed, re-traumatised by Vecna and still manages to save the day.
