"What about Nancy?" Dustin asks softly against his lips, and Steve knows he's not asking out of jealousy or resentment, but out of curiosity and a good dose of logic.
It's a logical question, considering how hard Steve was trying to get closer to Nancy, to win back the heart of someone who was never meant to be his... and whom Steve doesn't want to be his, because the person he wants is right in front of him, waiting for something Steve should have given him long ago.
He exhales softly with a small, sly smile, feeling a tenderness that almost makes his chest ache. He breathes against Dustin's lips, barely touching them, not yet kissing them, and as if his voice were touching something sacred, he murmurs:
"Turns out she was just my Tammy."
Or: As they prepare to return to the Upside Down, Steve and Dustin confess their feelings.

“What?” Steve breathes, his footsteps stopping short. Just out of arm’s reach.
“It was that week Will was missing… Troy Walsh and James Dante came after us. Chased us through the woods. We’d just reached the quarry when Troy grabbed me and put a knife to my neck.”
Behind him, Steve inhales sharply, but stays silent.
“Said if Mike didn’t jump he’d cut me. And I begged him not to.”
Dustin palms at his eyes, trying to stave off the tears that threaten to spill over like waterfalls into the drained quarry.
“Asshole didn’t listen."

This is essentially my take on what Steve was thinking at the end of the fight with Dustin and the ladder scene. The ladder scene hit me so hard so I wrote what might have been going on in Steve's head as well as expanded on it, because we were absolutely DEPRIVED of more Steve and Dustin angst.

Summary
Steve thinks he has it under control. It’s just an unstable staircase and a bit of a climb— a calculated risk to get the job done.
But when the concrete begins to melt and Dustin screams, Steve realises they aren't looking at the same thing. Steve sees a mission; Dustin sees another person leaving him behind.
In the wreckage of a collapsed ladder, Steve has to face the one thing he didn't factor into his plan: the boy who refuses to watch him die.

The confrontation soon escalates into a possessive claiming where the trauma of the past is met with absolute devotion.

The kid is on his own, sitting on the ground outside the school building. His back leaning against the school’s phone box, like he was hoping someone might ring. He looks completely pathetic, crumpled up and small. He’s basically the only person left in the parking lot; even the teachers have long fucked off home.

The sun is warm, the ocean is beautiful. Leave is quiet and gentle and all the other antonyms of what real life means for them both.
Going back to base after all this is a testament to Soap's strength and willpower. In fact, the next time anyone wants to insinuate Soap doesn't do what he's told, he will refer them to the fact that he's literally ripping himself away from peace and paradise just to go back to sitting through debriefings and getting shot at.

“Hey Ghostie,” a man with a Scottish accent said, the sound of him settling onto the floor on the other side of the door filled the silence of the hall, “Oof my knees aren’t what they used to be.” he chuckled leaning back against the wall beside his door, “So how was your day of testing? I heard they were seeing how your uh… tentacles worked?” he asked, his tone changing on the word tentacles as if he was unsure if that was the proper word to use.
Ghost didn’t reply but felt a small smile pull at his lips as he listened to the Scot ramble on about everything and nothing at the same time. It had been a few months since he was found by the SCP Foundation and he turned himself in. It took only a week for him to start getting his late-night visitor, unprompted and he never needed to speak, the other man was happy to chatter away on his own. He was thankful for a sense of companionship, it helped him from going completely crazy while locked away in the dark all alone at night.

Come on, Price has been testing me for months, I have run some recon missions, I’m itching to get back into the real stuff.” Ghost couldn’t help the worry that still sat in his chest. This was Johnny’s first serious mission since he’d gotten shot, his first serious mission in nine months.
He reached out slowly, fingertips just brushing Johnny’s forehead, dancing over the prominent scar, “What about the migraines?”
“Aye haven’t had on in a while Si, just little headaches.” They used to get really bad, bad to the point where Johnny wouldn’t be able to move. At the start they were particularly bad, every other day. But the more time has passed they became fewer and farther apart.
“Wheels up in five!”
“If something starts to feel wrong, I’ll let you know, straight away.”

"It's just gas Doc," he claims. "Really bad gas, I'm totally fine."
"Light-"
"Do you know what I'm feeling right now?" He demands. "Exactly, you don't- so please stop assuming."
It's more aggressive than Lightning usually gets with him, but there is no way in hell he's being toted off to some fucking hospital; especially not for some asshole Doctor, who's not Doc, to just laugh at him for over-reacting about some nuclear level gas pain.
No fucking way.
(Or the one where Lightning gets an appendicitis and is super duper in denial about it- good thing Doc is there to talk some sense into him!)
