“There’s a ring in the sugar.” Stede observes.
“Mhmm.” Ed says, waiting for him to catch on. He’s holding his breath.
“Wow— it’s— did you know this, Ed? It’s gorgeous, is that pearl?”
“Mhmm.”
Stede reaches in to grab the ring and gasps again just to see it up close. “That’s an abalone pearl. Shit, Ed, how—“
He looks forward now, and eye to eye he can see as Stede finally clicks in. His jaw goes a bit slack and his eyes go a bit watery as he just keeps looking. Ed can’t help himself as he reaches forward to take Stede’s hand in his own. He lifts their joined hands up to his lips gently.
“I can’t exactly kneel…” He starts.
