The very particular and divine experience of Rozanov’s escalation of that trademark mode of sultry suction that pushes past not only the flushed bloom of Shane’s lips but also apparently beyond all of his defenses because -
Hell. Fucking absolute hell.
Shane might be starting to like him.
Okay, well - this is unexpected, unanticipated, entirely unplanned for - and therefore, Shane’s nipping that one down in the bud.
He squares the slope of his shoulders as the elevator comes to a stop on the eighth floor, and the doors open…
…to reveal a very tousled, slightly out of breath, and beautifully flushed Ilya Rozanov, as if Shane summoned him here via his own dastardly brain matter. He looks the same as when Shane left him save for the fact that he’s replaced the damp towel around his hips with a pair of slacks and the white formal shirt he’d been sporting when Shane initially walked in.

And now Shane is absolutely having some sort of panic-and-pheromone-induced fever dream, because why the fuck is he looking at Ilya Rozanov’s face, scowling at him right then and there in front of God, the Boston seaport that’s visible outside the hotel window, and his best friend Hayden Pike?!
“Whoever these fans are, they aren’t ones of yours,” Hayden sighs as if he’s actually disappointed in this mystery gift-giver.

It's January 2017 and Shane is still dating Rose Landry. After a solid week of feeling off and under the weather, Rose convinces Shane to see a doctor before he takes the ice in the Montreal vs. Boston game that night. Finding out he's pregnant definitely wasn't on his bingo card. He vows to tell Ilya that night, despite the fact the Russian has been ignoring his attempts at reaching out. But then, Ilya goes down on the ice after a hit from Comeau and doesn’t wake up.
It is in that moment that Shane realizes two things: he’s in love with Ilya and Ilya is also in love with him. Why else would he have Shane on his list of people to contact in an emergency. Getting that call from Cliff Marleau was not how Shane anticipated his life going, but here he is and he has some big decisions to make, with or without Ilya.

While Troy might not know Russian, or any other Slavic language that might have offered him some sort of context, he understands the word for mother. His heart clenches in his chest. Calling for your mom, especially when you’re hurt and confused feels instinctive. Troy is pretty sure he’d do the same thing. But the thought of coming out of your dazed state while desperately wanting your mom, and the loss of your mom coming crashing down on you must be a different type of agony.
Roz starts speaking again, Russian coming to him easier than English must. “Mama? Gde moya mama?”

Ilya’s feeling a little silly about the thought in and of itself, because everyone owns black t-shirts. This is a perfectly normal, ordinary article of clothing, and there is no reason for Ilya to be so magnetized by it that he is now reaching inside Shane’s suitcase to remove what is a completely innocuous black cotton tee that is clearly something Shane has always owned. The same kind that Ilya also owns, and ‘casually’ tossed at Shane when Shane was lying delectably shirtless in his bed a few months ago that godforsaken day in Boston Ilya can't bring himself to stop thinking about.
Chert, Shane hasn’t just infected Ilya with his boring, his never-ending stream of consciousness mind-babble must be contagious, too.
Ilya picks up the folded shirt and immediately forgets to be concerned about The Hollander Effect on his nervous system, because - yes, that’s definitely the scent of Ilya’s fabric softener lingering on those cotton fibers. He knows that for a fact because he can’t ever find his favorite brand in the US, so he always brings a case from Russia when he returns from a visit.
Okay, so Shane kept Ilya’s shirt.
And neglected to wash it.
That’s hot, right?

Shane Hollander knows he’s not a small guy. Years of hockey and workouts have built up his muscles, and lucky genetics from his father’s side places him just shy of six feet. He’s checked hockey players half a foot and several pounds more than him, knocked Scott Hunter into the ice in the one fight he’s ever actually thrown hands in. But as much as Shane loves the game, the fast movements, passes, and team camaraderie, there were times where he could only feel regret at following the path of athletic fame. He puts on the media smile he practices in the mirror as he brushes his hair each day, uses the bright lights of press conferences to erase his view of the audience, and keeps his answers simple and focused on hockey.
The number of people outside the arena still makes him feel crushed in on all sides, small. Eyes trained on his face, cameras flashing, pens and cell phones being passed into his hands. The itch of it all settles under his skin.
