“Three!” They rush out like a flood. Rain pelts them hard, and Phil flings out his wings immediately. His head gets soaked, but techno only gets a few raindrops on his face as they go from awning to awning on the street. It’s coming down so hard that they can barely see a hand in front of their faces.
That’s when tragedy strikes.
Or when he bumps into someone.
Someone important.
Someone dangerous.
And as he looks up… someone beautiful.
They fell underneath a darkened awning, and the street lamps hardly gave off enough light, but it didn’t matter. Phil could tell that this was someone beyond the word pretty. But the moment ends when Tommy starts crying. Like real wailing. Wailing like it would take a couple of hours for him to calm him down. Immediately, it’s like all his instincts are on fire. Air seizes in his trachea as he drops the lone plastic bag on the sidewalk, desperately trying to unclasp the carrier. He can’t even twitter in panic, and his vision darkens.
“—Hey, the kid is okay. Hey, hey, shit—”
“Ms. K said that’s a bad word…”
“And she’s totally right, so it’s just a secret between us.”

It’s still like the aftermath of a bomb or when a forest goes silent in the presence of a predator, something bigger and badder. The clanging of keys in Izuku’s limp hand are the only sound for a second. Then footsteps, slow stalking footsteps, different from a woman’s. Heavier and not even trying to be quiet. But maybe that’s intentional.
Aizawa-sensei comes around the corner like a ghost. It will probably haunt him for the rest of his days the way the teacher looks standing in his home. Dark eyes that are always half a blink away from red whenever he sees Izuku. Holding some emotion that Izuku could never place until now— possessiveness but also love. Overflowing like a cup, practically brimming with it like an over-ripe fruit about to burst on his tongue. The sick sweetness of it makes him want to gag.
He couldn’t see it before. But now he does. He does.
I see you.

Tommy wears a bracelet of red cord around his wrist, a pop of color.
A little lure.
Practically everyone tells him never to take it off and Tommy is very tempted to see what would happen if he did. It would probably be more exciting than his parents’ party. But a quiet part of him knows that the little red cord around his wrist is meant to deter rather than attract the attention of people who have more magic in their blood than him and his mother. Beings that are made of magic and ether, live and breathe time like it is nothing.
Those beings are Fae.
They can’t lie. They can’t tell you that the sky is purple, and the moon is made of cheese. But they can talk to you in circles and tell you things that taste like spun sugar on your tongue. They can trick you and see you as a possession so they take you.
Tommy’s not a possession, he’s a boy of ten. So he wears the red cord.

Summary
A bolt of panic struck deep in his soul when the Grisha Testers came the first time to see if anyone from the orphanage was Grisha. Tommy panics and tries to grab Tubbo to run. The way their dusty boots beat loudly on the creaky wooden floors, their nerves fraying at the sounds of the other children gathering. Finally reaching the kitchen, fields of tall grass swaying outside the windows when Tubbo‘s hand tips over a glass, and it shatters on the ground in shards of rainbow fractals. Tubbo hurriedly tries to clean up the mess while Tommy jerks the door open. The ominous clicking of the Matron's heels sounds like the hounds of hell when Tubbo shoves Tommy out the door and tells him to hide. The crisp air tastes bitter at the back of his throat when he sees Tubbo get dragged away.
That day Tubbo was tested, and Tommy was decidedly not.

Tommy touches Tubbo’s pain-riddled face with gunpowder-stained hands. “Please, please, please, please Tubbo,” A wet gasp came from his friend's throat, “I'm right here, please, I’m right here.”
Glassy blue eyes stare up at Tommy with a soft-spoken question. “Forever?”
The answer is yes.
The answer will always be yes.
