Your first pair of track shoes were ten bucks at the Goodwill and the soles were already wearing a little thin, and sometimes when it rained too hard after practice you could feel water leaking in through the rubber. Sometimes you could feel the hard pressure of the concrete against the bone of your heel. They weren’t perfect shoes but they were good enough and what you’ve learned, if nothing else, is sometimes that’s all you can hope for.

Kiyoomi had loved Atsumu long, long before the rest of the universe did; back in their awkward pre-pubescent days when Atsumu’s incubus blood still sat dormant and quiet in his veins, back when Atsumu used to pop the collar of his polo shirts because he thought it looked cooler and grew out his bangs to hide his acne and tried to squash down the thick drawl of his accent to fit in better with the snobby prep kids.
Then Atsumu turned 16 and everything changed.

What’s Gonna Be Left of the World (If You’re Not In It) by enaven
Oh. Oh wow. This ACHES with sincerity and fear and love. Annie and Pieck’s relationship here is so compelling and complex. Here’s Annie, who can’t really say she cares about anyone or anything other than her father, willingly (if haltingly) accepting both the physical and emotional love of her warrior sister. The way the found family plays out here is fantastic and fascinating- the idea that the warriors non-existent futures are a catalyst for found family creation? Now that’s an incredible take. The way Pieck sees the kids as ‘her kids,’ that really got me. And then the conclusion- beginning with the physical intimacy between Pieck and Annie and concluding with Porco and Pieck’s night together, the emphasis on intentional, authentic bodily connection when all warriors bodily autonomy has been taken by the state, when their bodies are military tools outside their command? This was gold, and such a brilliant way to show character and world.
I loved this! Perfectly nailed the tone of this portion of the story, the loss and longing and nostalgia and the spider-thin string of hope knitting it all together. -

Summary
The rain had started up again. Fat droplets drummed over her hood, drenching the fabric. Her horse’s reins were wet and cold; though her fingers, numbed from continued exposure to the elements, could hardly feel them.
Following the sound of the explosion, they’d arrived at a clearing. It was a mess of blackened, shattered wood, and the wagon, a skeleton, was little more than a smoking husk. Beyond the wreckage, a titan lay prostrate. Felled, its limp, hulking form was barely visible through the rain.
As soldiers shouted, pointing at the creature, one of the horses still tethered to the ruined wagon, writhed. When the beast screamed a broken, panicked wail, her own horse shifted, flanks twitching with unease.
Hanji barely noticed.
The soldiers' voices, the poor beast’s screams, even the heavy, even thrum of rain - had silenced as she looked to the river.
A body lay at the edge of the dark, white-capped water.
