sokka stretches out a little more and purrs in the back of his throat. he lets the warmth of the sun soak into his bones. firebenders may get their power from the sun and waterbenders from the moon, but sokka isn’t either. he just likes laying in beams of light like… an spirit. or a sleepy performer. or a… hm.
“sunflower,” zuko suggests from somewhere behind him and only then does sokka realize he’d been talking aloud. he laboriously pulls himself into an upright position, taking care not to leave the spot where the sun bleeds through a hole in the foliage above him, and looks over at zuko. the other boy is sitting, forearms braced on his thighs, on an old stone bench. another ray of sunlight- one that sokka hadn’t even noticed- curls around his shoulders. he offers sokka a tired smile. “you’re not pretty enough for a spirit.”

“Come spar with me,” Sokka says, just like that. The sun is setting in the sky and Katara’s food is beginning to stir Momo from his nap, and a few feet away Zuko can see Suki attempting to teach Aang a very basic fighting stance while Toph laughs.
It still doesn’t explain why Sokka is still there, looking at Zuko like Zuko is the insane one for being doubtful. “Why?”
Sokka flails. “Why– because! Because I’m bored! Because I want to! Because– I don’t know, Zuko, why does anyone do anything?”
“You do realize you would lose, right?” He says instead of trying to parse through his reasons.
“Oh, I see how it is, you’re scared you’re gonna lose. That’s okay, I get it, I’d be too if I were you.”
It’s not that Zuko doesn’t know he’s being played, he knows, but the challenge is still out there, in the air, and he has never been good at standing down. Sokka’s got him there and he knows it and Zuko knows it and probably even Katara, wherever she is, knows it too. “Fine,” he snaps, “but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Sokka laughs. “Famous last words.”

It was the middle of the night, and Sokka was thoroughly disappointed to be tasked with burying their garbage before moving camp in the morning. Sometimes he felt they only kept him around to do their dirty work, a literal earth bender is here and he has to go out into the woods by himself to dig and redig spirits-know how my holes. Despite his displeasure at the situation, he ventured into the woods with a spade and his new sword at his side, just in case, silently griping under his breath all the while.
The last thing Sokka expected was to see that night was Fire Prince Zuko sniffing around their campsite.

Summary
Sokka knew Fire Nation customs were weird, especially the customs surrounding royalty, but it seemed impossible for something like treating your sparring partner to be so outrageously out of Zuko's comfort zone. For Sokka, it was common sense, even if he'd grown up sparring with cloth bundles instead of real people. It was just the right thing to do. Maybe this wasn't even a Fire Nation thing, maybe it was a Zuko thing. After all, it was only recently that he'd even decided to join Team Avatar and hitch his hopes with the good guys. This might just be one of the many things that former villains had to learn – like smiling, or laughing in a way that didn't sound sharp and bladed. But looking at Zuko now, still staring at him, he had a good idea it was the former.
