    Emmrich Volkarin visits Treviso for a museum opening and a shopping tour. Since his dear friend, First Talon Lucanis, will be out on a job, he gets contract negotiator Seraphine Montilyet as a minder. Seraphine, shrewd and watching for any sign Emmrich Volkarin might be after the Dellamorte riches - there are rumors! - soon stumbles across a far bigger problem. The people of the city adore the professor and think Lucanis treats him badly.

    Someone will have to make those two ridiculous men face the fact they are in love. Seraphine just wishes it wasn't her.

    He barely caught it — the soft breath of thanks — yet it was still a struggle not to flinch away; to apologise for the situation they found themselves in. “Get some rest,” Lucanis murmured into Emmrich’s nape instead. Weak yet even breaths followed as Emmrich seemed to doze off, the worrying rattle from earlier thankfully absent. He didn’t look forward to the awkward conversation they would have to have, but if Emmrich was still alive to have it, Lucanis would consider it a fair exchange.

    When a Venatori ambush leaves Lucanis and a wounded Emmrich trapped in the High Anderfels, they're forced to navigate the treacherous landscape in hopes of reuniting with their lost companions and the Grey Warden patrol they were meant to find. But the mountains hold more than storms and uncanny predators, and Lucanis must wrestle with a far more dangerous conflict: his fiercely guarded feelings for the very necromancer he has sworn to protect.

    Lucanis faced him fully and Emmrich could almost feel the point of his stare needling at such thoughts. “Relationships die too.”

    Emmrich laughed again. It was a warm thing amongst the flowers. “I can hardly say I’ve spent my mortal years as a recluse or a saint. Those are memories I’ll cherish for centuries.” He cherished them now, every stumble when he was young and then less young, every passionate affair that felt like months swirling in wine and fire. He knew the difference between love and lust, of having someone’s name between your lips or your teeth. Sometimes he’d think on them and feel the vigour of that younger man, someone ready to take risks, dive in and damn the consequences. Then he’d catch himself staring back in the mirror, prim, handsome, distinguished even, but time had taken its fair share. He’d prefer if it did not take any more.

    “If someone you truly cared about did not want you to change, would it deter you?” Lucanis asked.

    Emmrich felt the weight of the question hang in the air. “Well, if a lover told you not to take your Grandmother’s title, would you listen?”
