Summary
Zuko realizes his destiny much earlier. As in, as soon as he wakes up in the palace after his Agni Kai and is told he is banished. Unfortunately, he's never been a patient one. So he storms right up to Ozai and tells him what he's going to do. And gets locked up for over three years. Then, one day, he's being pulled out and told he's the new Fire Lord.
A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.

“Never, and I mean never volunteer yourselves for the games,” Phil says, voice low, “I don’t care if it’s for your best friend. I don’t care how young the tribute is. I care about you and only you.”
“What about if it’s one of us?” Techno asks, gears already turning in his head, “What then?”
“Then don’t do that to each other,” Phil breathes, “I know what you’re thinking, Tech, I know how you are. But if you volunteered for any of them and didn’t come home? Can you imagine how they’d feel?”
Techno frowns, leaning back into the couch. He doesn’t agree, but doesn’t refute him. Wilbur hooks his arm around his twin’s as a gentle reminder that he’s here.
But Phil’s aching heart can’t ignore the reality that one day, they may not be.

Or, the Hunger Games are a fierce competition. Phil has survived where others fell, and now he’s a mentor. But he also has a family. And as the kids grow older, that proves to complicate things.

His eyes flicker over all of the boy’s features—his round, blue eyes, lashes fluttering, eyes shifting. His strong chin and nose, not…completely dissimilar to Wilbur’s. Golden curls, curving and waving down Tommy’s forehead, twisting around his ears.
Wilbur can feel his own curls do just the same.
A sort of airy insanity fills Wilbur’s chest as he brings a shaky hand towards Tommy’s hair. So similar to his own.
The barked laugh comes out so quick Wilbur almost chokes on it.
Holy shit.
This is his son.
He’s a fucking father.

Wilbur awakes in a hospital bed with no memory of the past few years. The only thing he knows is that Tommy—passionate, stubborn, worried—has got to be his son.
