Driver's ed isn’t actually that bad, even if it’s an utterly pointless class for most kids growing up in Hell's Kitchen. Still, Matt had been assured by Ms. Kay that the course no longer entails putting kids behind the wheel, so his attendance won't put anyone in immediate danger. The coursework is essentially to prepare them for the written test given at the DMV, and Matt is good at tests, so —
“You want to ace it?” Nelson sounds surprised, but not derisive, which is a step up from most of Matt’s interactions with peers. He smells a little like an old penny underneath his body wash. “Seriously, dude, that’s so not necessary.”
Matt rolls his eyes and wonders if Nelson can see the gesture behind his glasses. “It is if I want to keep my 4.0.” And my pride, he adds in his head.
Or: In his sophomore year of high school, Matthew Murdock takes driver's ed, gets into fights, and makes a friend.

Foggy listened to the words with a dull lack of comprehension. Maybe it was because Matt had always gotten back up. He’d been stabbed, shot, crushed under a building and still, he’d always gotten back up. More scarred. More damaged. But still irrevocably, stubbornly Matt Murdock.
Foggy couldn’t quite accept that this time, he might not.
