Summary
For the first time in four years, Will Byers is free. The grip the upside-down had on him has been relinquished, and he and his friends can live out the few months of childhood they have left.
But nothing is quite right: Lucas is but a shell of a person, Dustin has forgotten his girlfriend of two years, and Mike? Mike Wheeler, the heart of the group, has been a ghost of who he was for a long, long time.
And it's not just his old party: Robin, Jonathan, Hopper, Nancy, even his Mom, the same woman who would not rest till she found the truth all those years ago, glaze over their final battle like it was nothing.
A final fight that was too easy, a flickering reality of a town, a heart withering and rotting with grief in his basement. Just like that, Will begins to question just who won that last fight and how exactly he helped Vecna one last time.

Summary
We jump into a quarantine-lifted Hawkins, 1990. The consequences of the final battle with Vecna have left Will’s eyesight severely impaired.
Mike, juggling his roles between being a university-student and son to two newly disabled parents, ends up taking on the role of primary caregiver in he and Will's budding relationship, and with money given to them by the government the two of them have moved into a nice one-story house in Mike's college town; only an hour or two away from Hawkins' while being a close enough drive to Mike's campus.
OR
Will is essentially blind, Mike is his caregiver. New tensions arise with their newfound dynamic and it puts a damper on their sex-life. Messily, they work it out by bickering in front of all their family and friends at Christmas dinner.

“Hello?” she shouted, to nobody in particular. She felt like an idiot in a horror movie, but it just came out of her mouth, just like that.
“Hi?” a small voice replied, strange and garbled like a young child who still didn’t really know how to speak but tried to anyway.
She stepped forward and, as her flashlight’s beam hit the trash can, she saw a dark shadow of a body across the grass. Without a word, she walked around the can, not knowing what to expect on the other side, but somehow knowing that whatever was on the other side wasn’t there for her.
There, she saw him. A boy. He wore clothes much too large for his small frame, practically swallowing him whole, and his lips twitched in what could only be fear or sadness. His face was off. A scrap of fabric hung over the left side of his face, somehow tied into his long, tangled hair, and it was completely soaked in blood, so much blood that it had stained his face and neck almost entirely.

“Of course,” Will sighs. “Well, then, I swear.”
